Location: Hot Springs, S.D. | I jam along with the folks down here at the shop every day, but when I want to play MY music, it's first thing in the morning with about four cups of coffee. I have found that when I'm half asleep, whatever song wants to be played comes out. If I THINK about a song to play, it doesn't come out right. I just let my fingers do what comes to them and it usually works. (This goes along with my theory that music is part of what makes up space/time, and like gamma rays, x-rays, neutrinos, etc., they pass by, and if you're sitting in the right place at the right time, they pass through YOU, if you're a receptor. Yeah, I know I'm weird.)
If I'm working on learning a new song, I will go from the last chord that is easy to play, through the hard part and on to the next chord that is easy to play. I will do this over and over until my fingers learn it.
If I'm writing a song, I try not to think, and just let my fingers do what they want. When they hit upon something good, I stop and take notice. Then once I'm sure I'll remember that part, I just "free associate" some more. |
