David Russell is a fantastic classical player - invariably voted number one by other professional players - but also someone who shares his knowledge with others. This is from the liner notes (verbatim) of his cd Music of Moreno Torroba:- Recorded in Mechanics Hall, Worcester, Mass. February 11-13 1966. Microphones: Coles 4038 and Sennheiser MKH-20 On Stage Mic preamplifier : Millennia HV-3 Console: Panasonic-Ramsa, custom engineered by John Windt. Digital Recording Processor: Telarc/UltraAnalog 20 bit ADC, custom engineered by Kenneth Hamann. Mic and Interconnecting Cables: Music Interface Technologies Proline and "Live Wire" speaker cables. Monitored through Krell "Studio" 20-bit ADC. Monitor Speakers: B&W 801 Matrix, Series II. Power Amplifier: Threshold Model S/1000 Pure Class A/AB Stasis. Control Room Acoustic treatment: Sonex by illbruck/usa Digital editing: SADiE Disk Editor. "During the recording of the digital masters and the subsequent transfer to disc, the signal was not passed through any processing device (ie compression, limiting or equalization) at any step during production". Given I just had to sit and type this I hope some of you recording freaks enjoyed the info - I've never seen so much detail on a cd sleeve before. I guess I should add that his guitar sounds absolutely fantastic on the recording. | ||

That's the most interesting part of the liner notes, Clive. Is this common for classical recordings? I have followed Manfred Eicher's career (see now "Horizons Touched") and must assume that he does not heavily "doctor" he sound of his ECM acoustic artists. | ||

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | Don't know whether he played with Nektar, but he's played with just about everybody over the last 30-odd years. There's a nice dvd around with him playing with Larry Coryell (recent enough for Larry to be sober and playing very well) and he's very good on it. I don't know if all classical guitars are recorded that way - but very few are recorded in studios. Churches/halls/cathedrals seem to be the preferred pecking order. The reason as far as I can see is that there is no really successful DSP for reverb when you have just a single super-quality acoustic guitar. You just need the real thing. On the same lines I read somewhere that on stage Paco uses his single mic with no eq, reverb or limiting at the board. The difference in sound compared to McLaughlin who on the later recordings used his stereo out from his Wechter plus a mic to get his sound is noticeable. The stereo outs were definitely DSP'd. Remember as well that all classical guitar recordings are essentially "live" albums. As a matter of honour they are NEVER supposed to over dub a phrase here and there. No idea if they ever break the rules..... David Russell's label is Telarc - and the recording of Al Di's Legend was always so good in his Telarc days. | ||
