Been away from the Forum for awhile, but back with gusto for Ovation!

Yesterday I played a new Ovation Glen Campbell Model 1627 40th Anniversary guitar at Guitar Center. It blew me away...

This guitar sounded GREAT both plugged and unplugged and was offered at $1369 (plus 8.5% sales tax here in Calif).

What can you tell me about this model? Did I just happen to play a great one, or are they all like this? Is GC's price reasosnable or should I be able to do better?

Please express all thoughts about this guitar, both pro and con.

Many thanks!

There's only one GC in SF I know about and it's on Van Ness ST.

They are all that good. That's a good price. You might want to check with Al and see if he can match or beat it, but these are very good guitars.

Thanks moody, but who is Al? I've been away from this Forum for quite awhile.

Thanks!

The lowest...

Under Links look over at Lost Art Vintage Instruments.

Then go and Google for "Pepiak, the Golden" or something like that. He may even have some posts about the GC Anniversary issue in the archived posts.

Hmmmm...GC/SF has this model discounted to only $1829 on their site. Must be a special sale or something.

At some point in time you gotta stop shopping for the lowest price and just go for what's in your hand. That's what Cliff told me anyway.
I suspect that all the 1627 reissues are great.

The tag said "List Price $2499.00" and then the sale price said $1369.00. Sounds like a special sale or is a 46% discount normally achievable on Ovations?

SFGC always has a large stock of Ovations on hand.

Bill, every 1627 I've played has been wonderful. I was prepared not to like these guitars, thinking that they should have built as a reissue the GC Deluxe Balladeer shiny bowl. I still wish they'd do a reissue of the GCDB, but the 1627 is a great guitar. Good acoustic sound, great plugged in. Easy to play. Very comfortable. I'm glad I have one.

The only Ovation I've owned/played/gigged with was a beautiful black Model 1869 Custom Legend (super shallow bowl).

I loved EVERYTHING about this guitar except:

1) Lousy unplugged tone
2) Way to much piezo quack plugged-in tone

It brought tears to my ears to sell it, but that's what I did about 5 or 6 years ago. I mean I LOVED the appearance and neck on this axe!

I've been trying to find a new one with updated electronics that meets my sound requirements, but to no avail. It was quite by accident I walked into SFGC and saw this Model 1627 sitting on a stand.

I almost didn't pick it up because I figured if they used the vintage electronics it would not sound good enough to my ears. I was WRONG!!! It sounded great both plugged and unplugged.

I have no doubt I'll own one of these in the hopefully not-too-distant future. If I'd had the cash I would have grabbed this one in a heartbeat.

It's good to know that most of you feel the quality control/tone on this model is consistently great.

Many thanks to all for your thoughts/help!

Bill

The only problem with the GCRI is that 1) it needs a shiny artist bowl, 2) inlaid rosette, 3) 5 point rosewood bridge, 4) dark walnut faced headstock, 5) acoustic only, ...

Oooops

Shiny deep bowls are a dime a dozen. A shiny ARTIST bowl on the other hand ...
