Hey, Y'all. It's me again. I'm seriously looking at the 1114 currently on ebay (auction ends in less than 2 hours). I've also found this other lefty, I believe to be a 1537, and was wondering in your estimable opinions which is better?

1537 is a BEAUTIFUL sounding guitar, though it is heavy as acoustics go... It is also one of the the more sought after.... (has stereo electronics)

The 1114 will be lighter and most likely less expensive but, still a nice guitar...

I'm not sure it's a 1537, but I went on the ovation website and it was the closest that I found. Were there any others that look similar? I don't know how to post a photo on here or I'd put one. What would be a good price for one?

Wow! They are both great, but different. I don't think you can say one is better than the other. The 1537 has a standard neck and may be one of the best Ovations made. It was the first Elite model. The Folklore has a shorter, wider neck and is a fingerstyle guitar. You might find it better or worse, depending on the size of your hands. I paid 3 times as much for my 1537 than I did for my Folklore, both in excellent condition, if that tells you anything. A 1537 goes for around $1000 and a Folkore for $400, give or take, depending, etc.

There are a bunch of 1537 look alikes, so be careful. Some are good, some not. I can't think of one that is worth as much as a 1537.

Email me with the photo, I just sent you my address.

There are other guitars that do look like the 1537

The Pictures aren't very detailed, but, a 1537 is what we have come to call a "Two Knobber" meaning the only bit of the electronics you see are two wooden knobs for tone and volume.

The guitar pic you sent has an OPX (nice) preamp. It also has white binding and the 1537 has wood binding. So I'd say that those pics are of an Elite 1718 or the like. Still a nice guitar

Thank you Jeff. I'm in the process of buying my first guitar and have decided to go with an Ovation. It's hard to find a lefty. I'm afraid that the 1114 will be a little too wide for my small hands, so I'm going to keep looking. Is the Elite 1718 a good sounding guitar? What would you give for one?

Sorry for the false 1537 alert, y'all. :o

I'd say in the $500.00 range. Give or take. Oddly enough, I don't know much about the sound of these era elites, I know some folks 'round here have them and like'em but, I can't say I've heard one recently enough to advise you.

Give careful thought to that 1114 dey's nice guitars... even if a little wide...

Having small hands and taking up guitar again after a 35 year hiatus, and recently obtaining a 'Classic', here are a few of my observations on wide necks:

- allows you to finger pick with some forgiveness. Non-plectrum strumming and chord transitions are fun.

- will 'stretch' your hand span/'memory'.

- will make you feel inadequate thumb-wise on bass walkdowns (I'm gettin' there slowly).

- makes for 'fat' fingers on a slim neck (...just what I need, another (re)learning curve!).

The above can be considered positive or negative depending on your aspirations.

With me, the bottom line is that I absolutely LOVE my Classic and hopefully so will my Grandbabies!

Old Man Arthur just picked up a 1718, maybe he can chime in with an opinion. The 1537 is a truly magical guitar. I'll never get rid of mine.

Oh yeah, I haven't welcomed you to the board yet. Welcome!

If you can get a Lefty 1718 at a reasonable price, Get It!

Since you have no other O's, comparison is hard. Mine is very full sounding, deeper than my other guitars, but I can make it feathery if I use a lighter pick. It is an all-around nice guitar though... [My only other "standard" deep-bowl is a 1112 Custom Balladeer]

It weighs a ton! Once again I am comparing it to my other O's. It weighs like my semi-hollow-body Delta King (phony ES-335)... Meaning it is heavier than it looks. Since I play sitting down, it don't matter to me. Some picky stand-up stage-musicians might snivel.

Mine has an OP-24, no frills/just EQ. Once again, I play for myself so it don't matter.

OK... You made me Look! I just dug-out the 1112. The 1718 is maybe a coupla pounds heavier, but some of that may be electronics. But the 1718 definitely sounds deeper.

But Cut To The Chase...
If you have found a Lefty 1718 at a reasonable price... BUY IT!

[I think I said that already  ]

We have two threads going on this topic?

Shelly, don't play left handed. If you're just getting started, learn to play right handed. You'll be much happier 6 months from now, when you can pick up almost any guitar in any guitar store and play it. Playing left handed is a mistake! Don't do it.

I'll throw my 2 cents worth too. The 1718 has a great neck and is easy to play. It sounds fanastic acoustically or through an amp. If you can find one in good shape for a reasonable price, buy it. If you don't buy, let me know so I can. I love that guitar.

Once again, let me say I'm not sure this is a 1718, but it definately is a lefty. It's listed as "Ovation Elite Lefty". When I e-mailed and asked him what model Elite it was, and would he be willing to ship, he simply replied, that it was an Elite and no he wouldn't ship it. It's located in St. Louis and I'm not willing to drive that far.
