This takes me back to my teens.I just looked up Johnny Winters on Wikipedia and saw a picture of him playing a really odd guitar with the tuners below the bridge.I dont think I have ever seen one of these in person.Anyone ever play or see one of these?
How about some info on this guitar.
Old Johnny sure has seemed to aged a bit.
Are we all getting old??? GWB

I'd say it was an Erlewine Lazer. ;)

Probably a Steinberger. No headstock and tuners down under. Johnny has played these a lot over the years.

I heard he is in pretty poor health these days. Some friends of mine saw him in a really tiny local blues club. They said he had trouble walking and seemed like he was in pain. I think he was having a bad night.

He was on the latest Clapton Crossroads Concert DVD doing Highway 61. He sounded pretty damn good. If I remember correctly Derek Trucks was playing with him.

Or maybe an Erlewine Lazer. Although, he has played a lot of Steinbergers...

I consider Johnny Winter to be one the great virtuoso blues players.

Many well known guys like Clapton etcetera are really just imitators when it comes to playing/singing blues.

Johnny Winter is the real thing in the same way that Robert Johnson and Lightnin Hopkins are the real thing.

Once Winter is gone there won't be another one like him.

GWB, I've got a Hohner headless guitar, model G3T. It is a very similar idea to that Erlewine Lazer. Actually, it's a fairly close copy to a Steinberger.

It is a lot lighter than a regular solidbody electric. It is also small in size, yet has a full length scale. The tuners work well, and it does stay in tune better than standard tuners. I am not a trem fan, so I never use it. But it does lock the trem if you like.

The pickups are neutral and only moderate output. It is fine for running through a pedal or processor to get any kind of sound that you like, but by itself it is very neutral. It is actually a good thing if you want versatility. I've replaced all 3 pickups with DiMarzios to get some "typical" sounds without having to process it. It is a great travel guitar. For playing on your lap it has a little stand that flips out of the bottom, which works pretty well as long as you use an angled plug on your guitar cable.

The guitar with headphone amp/effects box and MP3 player:

I've never seen an Erlewine Lazer before. The "wineomatic" tuners are interesting. I used to own a Steinberger GP (yet another guitar I shouldn't have sold) which was very light, and extremely comfortable to play sitting down.

Do you fly with that setup, FlySig? I wonder what TSA would do when all those wires and cables went through the scanner. Heh.

I thought the same thing, but then I remembered that he's the pilot. Might be a lot of irate passengers if they wouldn't let him on the plane.

That neck looks wide, as does the nut. It is still called a nut, isn't it? I'd forgotten about Johnny Winter, truly a great bluesman. I'm heading off to iTunes to see what they got.

FlySig do you eve just have your cord hand completely fly off the end of the neck when you progress down from say an A chord to an F ? To me it looks like I would have to retrain myself to not have my chord hand slide off the end of the neck.GWB

Just scored "Progressive Blues Experiment", which I had as an album back in the day. Good s***, raw and hungry. Not like his polished self now. ;)

Good choice knuckles! Second Winter had some killer stuff on it. His version of Highway 61 Revisited is great! I saw Johnny live a few times back in the 70's. That tune was a real show stopper!

Still Alive and Well and Nothin' But the Blues are also great albums.

"Johnny Winter Live AND" has some good tracks on it as well and it's pretty clean for a live recording in those arenas he used to play at:

It's my own Fault

Johnny Winter, no S
Why do you always type the subject in caps? We can read the regular letters just fine.

This is the Johnny I remember in the seventies.
This is a very good actual live performance that was recorded and sounded decent back then.GWB

TSA has asked a couple of times what it is and have opened it up to take a look. Usually it's the stuff in the pocket, cords and headphone amp, that looks suspicious to them. I'm surprised that they let people fly with stringed instruments at all, but they do, so it's good for me. It goes on most of my overnights. Being small, it fits down the side of my seat in the cockpit.

Actually, yes it does happen once in a while. It's more of a problem when playing country lead while trying to slide on or off of notes on the first couple of frets. Normally it isn't a problem at all.
