First meeting Miguel was a great expirence.
He really is great guy w/an intersting job on Brazils National Police Force.
We met up in Grand Central Terminal before
walking over to Music Row on W. 48th street & 7th Ave. We looked around in the former Mannys.
(now Sam Ash)
Sadly all the memorabilia was gone.
We stopped into a Teds for Broiled Steaks, before
a leasurely walk through Times Square heading for the Lower East Side. The Concert was at "on the Oval" at Stuyvesant Town on 1st Avenue and 14th street. Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Villiage
was built by Met-Life in the late 1940's on 80 acres formally known as the Gas Light District.
The Oval was peaceful feel, like you were no longer on Manhattan. We arrived about 4:30
while the sound check was under way.

Here are a few preshow photos

Kaki King took the stage at 710 pm.
She started with the Adamas with her band mates.
She changed tuning or instruments on almost every song. To be honest Kaki the most innovative guitartist in my never humble opinion, since Eddie Van Halen. She performed with a couple of Hamer Guitars plugged into Fender Deville Deluxe.
She great sence of how to work a crowd between songs. She finished up the show on an Ovation
Uke.

After the show we chatted with Kaki for about 10 minutes. She a very friendly down to Earth person.
We both had photos taken with her.
But they Miquels camera.

All in all it was a great day.

Not a Kaki fan (I've tried - no go). It appears, however, that you guys had a great time. I grew up in NYC but haven't been there in years. Your description of your experience along with the pictures really had me wishing I'd made the trip.

PEZ, I'm glad you liked her show. She called from Boulder yesterday (doing a midwest mini-tour with Jenny Lewis).

She said she enjoyed meeting you and Miguel after the show and appreciated you guys being there. She said that you're right about Parks and Recreation and had no complaints about the gig's compensation.

While in the Boulder area she hiked on Long's Peak (elev. 11,000) and got a little altitude sick on the way down. If I'm not mistaken, Long's Peak is fairly close to Estes Park, one of the most beautiful high altitude parks I've ever seen.

Once again, thanks for checking out her NYC show.

Best--

Dave K.

Yes, Dave, Long's Peak is within the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park. If you've ever flown through DIA and peered at the front range of the Rockies, you'll see three prominent mountains among all the other lesser (if over 13,000 feet can be considered lesser) peaks. These three mountain peaks are, from north to south, Long's Peak (14,255'), Mount Evans (14,264'), and Pikes Peak (14,110'). Colorado has 53 mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet. Altitude sickness is a pretty common occurrence which can be avoided by drinking lots of water.

I'm on Condo board in urban area.
I was impressed with the way it looks.
Though I heard rent was pretty steep now.

When did you grow up there?

We wish you were there too...

Now the rents are steep. I still have friends who live there, but back in the 60's and 70's it was very middle class. There were no poor people, no wealthy people. They wouldn't rent to poor people, and it was not luxory enough for the wealthy. In fact, the apartments were pretty sparten. If you did something to violate the lease, like house non-relatives, you were kicked out. They carefully selecting who moved in, very good management. It was a white neighborhood, and Met Life built an equivalent neighborhood in harlem. You couldn't do things like that today, they'd say it was discrimination, and I had no say in where I was born and lived the first 21 years of my life.

It was designed to house vets. Heading south from sty town, I recall a puerto rican neighborhood, then skid row, then a jewish neighborhood, then chinatown, then the courts, then wall street. All in all, it was a nice safe little island in a crazy city. Good place for kids.

I'm sad it is so expensive now. The middle class, if they can, are leaving NYC, and all you'll have left are the wealthy and the serfs who support them.

The new owner is trying to rent it as luxery property now. Rents over $3000 a month seem common.

$3000 sounds about right. I believe if you got in before 1999, your lease increases are rent stabilized, usually about 4% a year. After that it's whatever the market will bear. Once a place becomes vacant, they allegedly put in $40,000 worth of improvements to an appartment, that takes it out of rent stabiliazion. I've seen some of the new apartments and frankly, that $40,000 seems to be hypothetical.

Anyway, they'll get the neighborhood they want with only rich people living there ... not that there was a problem with that but still ... or if the economy keeps going south, without the stability of the middle class, the place will fail. Time will tell.

My son lives there for the last 2 years. You are exactly right, they completely renovated the place before he moved in - new stainless kitchen, granite counters, wood floors, new bathroom, etc. Quite a nice job of it. He really loves the place and I can see why. He pays $3400. a month and well worth it.

Yes. He lives at #5 Stuyvesent Oval which is pretty much dead right when you're looking at the stage. He said Kaki was "the most talented unlistenable musician he has ever heard". Interesting way to describe it, but I know what he means.

Did anything happen with that lawsuit about how Tishman was overcharging the tenants and was using the "improvement" law as a subtrafuge to rip off tenants?

As I understand it, people who were charged over 2000 dollars per month would be getting some money back

Not sure about the lawsuit. Ironically, StuyTown is now owned by Blackrock, which is the company where my son works. He's asking for an employee discount. Blackrock bought it from MET for $5.4B which is the largest single realestate transaction ever. I mean the freaking place is 18 square blocks of manhatten, that doesn't come cheap. Well, until you consider that Blackrock manages $1.2 TRILLION in assets.

Sorry, but I have to agree. Interesting, talented but ...

I was considering going up there but something else came up that day. Glad you had a great time, Pez.
