If he'd had the foresight to check out a few days earlier it would have made for a nicely topical song introduction. Reportedly he was earning £80K a year just off the royalties from Baker St. So at least the alcholism and subsequent liver failure wasn't due to the cheap stuff. Small mercies. Anyone who can write just one instantly recognisable iconic song which has lasted decades is undoubtedly talented. But two? At least. Wow. Kinda humbling, or even "Humblebumming" for anyone who can remember that far back.

Fortunately I only live there, so I have an advantage. Joking aside... the drinking culture in Scotland is scary. And that's coming from me......

I just went back and listened to the first few tracks of "City To City" and the songs are still great but the production sounds really, really dated. I couldn't get through the whole album. Strange that there's other stuff from around then and earlier that still sounds killer.

As I sat and listened again to Baker Street, I realized that I was that guy who dreamt of buying some land, moving away from the city to forget about it all. I bought the land and moved, but could never forget about it all. Great songs, great musician, sad ending.

One of those perfect pop songs. You stand back and look at it, and you say it shouldn't be, but it is.
