Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | Is it just my imagination or is ADM the most faithful endorsee any guitar company ever had? Big fans of Jerry Donahue in this house but the guy has gone through signature models for Fender/G&L/and now Peavey (or some such-I read it in a mag last week). Eddie van Halen ditto. Gary moore jumping ship to Heritage and then back again. Almost every guitar company in the world has had a Johnny Smith model and a large number have had Joe Pass models. Only BB and Gibson spring to mind as being in the same league. Thoughts?

He plays other guitars as well as Ovation.. But i will tell you that if you were to ask him or if you were able to play like him you would understand why he plays a K-Bar A-gusset brace acoustic. He has a very strong attack on some progressions in which the A-gussett has the perfect compression to this.. Example - Whack a hard chord on a Taylor or even an LX and the sound is all over the place. As well as his fast soloing technique.. He is so good that each note plucked is met by the perfect timed press of the left hand resulting in such clear notes!!! Unlike most speed players who just brush the plectrum and hope the note sounds.. Any one as accomplished as AL and has the Incredible hulk hand strength as him would Understand. The K- Bar doesnt let the strings FLOP to miss a string soloing and the Gussett compression allows Hard strums to sound clear.. The LX has a more traditional loud fat tone.

Is there really a 1779-AD-II (essentially the same but mid depth bowl)? Is the 1769-AD-II neck anything like the sharp v shape neck like on the N769 craftsman model? ahh, thanks mike

If they change it I will be pissed. They are essentially Original Custom lengend traditional Ovations. With a turbo button ... I love the LX because thats where the FAT sofa, campfire , all you need is the guitar sound comes from.

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | Excellent stuff - thanks. The whole thing about how physically powerful ADM is is underlined on the Guitar Trio San Francisco album where McLaughlin who is the only guy in the world who picks as fast and accurately as al sounds far from his normal self simply because he's trying to match al's attack (and volume). The difference on the studio recordings is enormous - there he's not trying to be heard over superman with a deep bowl. Next time you see al tell him I've got all his cds and isn't it about time I got one for free?

Joined: March 2002 Posts: 255 | Sorry to bring this post up again.. But I noticed a little to do about it. To be fare to Paco De Lucia.. If you were to take Trio san fransisco and slow it down to audible range. Paco is quite a bit QUICKer than AL and John. And he picks with his fingers.. hehehehehhe Food for thought. I love the Fantasia suite on this..!!!!!!! kicks ass!!!!

Joined: November 2004 Posts: 4413 | Wasn't getting into the fastest gun in town thing - just noting how hard JM had to attack his guitar to stay in the game with AdM's very hard, loud way of picking. The comparison is fair given that they both play with every note individually picked. The Paco comparison is not really like for like - he uses hammer-ons and pull-offs all over the place and several of his more unbelievable passages involve him hammering on 4 note chords while playing the individual notes in perfect synch. It's got a wierd name, but there are few that can do it. Now - back to my guitar. It's a Country Artist with a radiussed fingerboard and dot inlays. It should be being built around June time. It will be played fingerstyle, but single string runs like Paco will feature strongly. Any chance you can do the set-up and send me a McLaughlin Wechter beater? I would also appreciate it if you could keep it away from the animals of the OFC while they are there. :D

Keep your eye on it and I will be your friend forever. Or not. The choice is yours - not everybody wants me for a friend.
