Location: atlanta | The cover story of the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine is titled "The New Guitar Gods". Twenty guitarists made this list, and there is only one woman--Adamas Artist Kaki King.
I am proud of this professional accomplishment by her, and extremely grateful to the Ovation Company and Kaman for their unfailing support of her career. I post this to share with her fans and friends of the OFC.

There's a reason, after all, that people don't talk about "keyboard gods".

Aside from that article, there nothing worth reading in the mag. I haven't read it in years and only picked it up because there were no other guitar or music mags there. It was a nice surprise to see the article on Kaki. |

Once you read the article, it makes sense, in that these are the most influential guitar players right now. Though, I have to say when I saw them, I had no idea I was seeing guitar gods.
I view it sort of like surfing, where society is like the ocean and a wave swells up from the depths, and certain people show up on the wave that are particularly good surfers.

But for the rest...
"New" guitar heros? Most of the guys are probably older than whoever the "old" guitar heros are...I have a lot of respect for Derek Trucks, RHCP, White Stripes, etc...but very few of those guitarists deserve to be called guitar heros (in my opinion).
Al is right on this one - the bar seems to have certainly been lowered.
I don't even remember the last time I read Rolling Stone for credible music opinions... |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | Not to be vicious, but I can get better information on music and alternative art and other such stuff from the free weekly papers. But I live in Portland. All you folks who live in the sticks can get better stuff online.
I also remember an interview with Jerry Garcia and Bob Wier, where they said that they were disappointed when the mass media decided they were famous. "Gee, we've been playing to sold-out concerts for thirty years... Now we are suddenly famous?" (They had just released 'Touch of Grey') |

I do agree with the sentiments of most on Rolling Stone, but in general, I almost feel sorry for some of the bigger "staple" magazines. In the age of the Internet, anything that is printed is at the very least "old news" and that must be hard to deal with.
The only rags I read these days are Guitar Digest, Torque and Robb Report Motorcycles. They actually have something in common in that they either focus or at least have articles that aren't "time sensitive." |

Location: NJ | I can remember back when RollingStone was printed on newsprint and was "folded" into half the size it is now. I've got a few years worth of those issues from back in that heyday ('68/69). Unfortunately, they're all on 35mm microfilm(LongStory). Anybody got a reader/printer??
I've had a free subscription for the past couple years that came when I bought something or other. Jeff's right. Some of the the politico-stuff CAN be interesting (if you can read through the "slant") and the Ahmet Ertegun piece was VERY well done (Jeff, remind me in May to tell you my Ahmet story). For the most part, it comes in, lands on the dining room table, I give it a cursory perusal. If something piques my interest, it goes upstairs into my bathroom. If not, it goes downstairs to the recycling bin . . . |
