Did you do anything to make the cord plug stronger? That reminds me, I have some small cracks radiating out from my Viper cord plug on the pickgaurd and I've been meaning to ask for any suggestions to repair/stop them from getting worse. I was thinking about a careful application of super glue, maybe even a very small stop drill. Any suggestions? Are you playing it a lot? What kind of amp are you using? Bailey

Maybe next time I change strings, I'll put a large metal washer under the pickguard. As to replacing the pickguard, Ovation sells them for $50, but to be honest, I'm not happy with the quality. It's rough around the edges, kinda rough on the top, and the edge trim, along with being rough seems to be uneven. I may order a pickguard from a place in Florida call WD. Email me and I'll send you the link. I suspect that I'm a weenie when it comes to amps as I've found that a Fender Princeton 65 works just fine for all my needs.

I will add that this model is the "Second Generation" of the Viper with the newer bridge. This is my favorite guitar, although I am partial to the older style bridge, the new bridge sounds very similar, and "fits" the guitar real well too. Post a pic of yours, we'd love to see it.

She took it in to Mars to have it fixed up (input jack put back on top, broken pickup switch replaced, new knobs, etc.). The guy put in a standard LP 3-way pickup switch. When it came back (after arguing with the repair guy that it was a Viper and not a Preacher), I noticed that it sounded much different than my other Viper. Its more twangy and thin sounding (I didn't really listen to it before the repair). Would the non-standard pickup switch have anything to do with that or have the pups been messed with as well?

Was there a production year that did not have the name printed on the pickguard, or do I have a replacement pickguard? Samova, MaybeI need an original pickguard from your NOS. Help?

I kinda wish they did, it would make ridiculous conversations like that a bit shorter. The argument came when I went to pick it up. I saw it sitting in the case on the floor of his workroom and I said I was here to pickup my wife's Viper. Well, she had the work ticket not me, so the guy was gonna give me a hard time. He started by telling me the guitar I was pointing to was a Preacher not a Viper. Since I knew it didn't say anything on the guitar I wasn't sure if he was gonna let me have the it. After a full description of what was inside that case (I was lucky it was the only black Ovation solidbody case in the room) he decided to let me get the guitar. He continued to tell me that this was a Preacher because the people he got the new pickgard from (which sux) told him so. I won't be taking anything back to them, no sweat. BTW, anyone know where I can get a black pickgard for a barnwood Viper? :)

The early p/g's had the name of the guitar on them, the later ones did not. I've got the catalogs in front of me.

Is the factory holding out until we all wear out the ones we got so we'll be sure to buy one? If that's so, I'm never going to see it as mine is good for at least 30 years more. Any of you going to the spring visit, prepare to bring this up. Any suggestions about the cracks around my plug? Bailey

I have a Viper that I bought new in the 70's, and it says Viper on my pickguard, a feature missing on Paul's deluxe, sorry to rub it in Paul, us traditional Viper owners have to stick together against these interlopers (a word they won't even understand). Anyway Lino, play that Viper and submit a song for the CD Project in Italian and force these guys to be international. I'm old but the ability to speak across continents amazes me. Bailey

The one I got from Ovation doesn't have anything on it. Per my catalogs, about 1983-4, just before the end of production they stopped putting the Viper name on the pickguard. I actually thought about having a trophy shop put "Viper Deluxe" on it, but it would mess with too many people's minds. Maybe I will do it.

Whatever you do, don't damage it any more by (gasp) playing your Viper. Just don't go too far and have it engraved "Paul's Viper Deluxe". Lino Keep us posted on your adventures with your Viper, I think you'll find many blues fans here. Bailey [ September 17, 2002: Message edited by: Bailey ]
