Location: UK | Found my mind went blanker than usual and initially played blackbird , too sad and predictable I thought plus was finding it hard to hear myself above the screaming riffs of a 15 year old spotty youth , moved on to that bit in space oddity that goes da da da da da da da dada then the first few bars of wish you were here with the climax being a repetition of G D G C G D G D C D G D which in my head was orrffan girl Gillian Welsh , sadly i forgot David R was busy elsewhere and that my rendition was pathetically inadequate and was informed by the staff man that the guitar police were on their way to remove such an expensive instrument from the hands of a talentless middle aged women covered in a light layer of dog hair ,SO any suggestions of simple things to play in guitar shops when under pressure and not drunk would be helpful |

Location: NJ | I usually go with ELP's "From the Beginning", or the old standard "Nobody Knows You When You're Down & Out" whenever my mind is a blank (which is usually often) and whether or not i have a pick in my pocket.
I think somebody should do a re-make of "Stairway To Heaven", but the intro should be intermittently peppered with the sound of a distorted, indiscernible, loud-speakered voice saying:
". . Kenny!. . pick-up "Guitars" on "Line One" please!! . ." in the background. |

And Wish You Were Here is the second amendment to that same Law....
I recommend "Ohio", that really shows your age.
And sing s verse of Positively 4th Street if they look at you funny.

Location: Budd Lake, NJ | Made up??!! That was the funniest line (at least, for me it was--I related to the "talentless" and "middle-aged" part; unfortunately, I am currently dogless, or that would have been apt, as well.)
I usually play some of my favorite finger-pickin' patterns up and down the neck; the circle of 5ths (and no, inspite of what some of you might think, this does not involve alcohol)--and anything else that I want. But, I'm usually in the acoustic room; if there are any mandolins, I might attempt Sousa's "Under the Double Eagle" just to see if the mandolin is playable (and mostly, they aren't.)

And that gives me inspiration to realize the full potential of the Guitar...
as soon as I get over the urge to sell all my guitars and burn all my chord books, and take-up the harmonica!*

Location: North Carolina | If I absolutely have to go to a guitar store, I go Wednesday mornings when it's least likely to be crowded. If I am interested in a guitar, I check it's tuning, then play a couple of bars from a few jazz standards like "The Lady is a Tramp" or "Watch What Happens". This is for the benefit of the staff not to impress them, but so they'll leave me the hell alone. Then I play a few simple things to evaluate the guitar, which ends up being not a whole lot musically, but tells me what I want to know about the instrument - tonal balance, setup, intonation at the higher frets, etc. I'm not there to entertain. If that's what they want, they can hire me. |

Location: New Jersey, USA | I play single note jazz runs, some bossa nova like "Wave," some of my own tunes, lots of open string chord voicings, octaves, etc. Usually the jazz licks are enough to prove to the staff that I'm not an easy or naive target.
ALWAYS insist on getting the guitar perfectly in tune. Otherwise none of the critical playing and listening matters. |

A good place to start when trying a new/different guitar at a shop or a friends house is THAT song you play whenever you first change your strings. Or something you are really familiar with. I play a lick similar to CWK2 with an F between the Em and C(Freebird) or a simple 12 bar blues |
