Got an i-Pad mini for Christmas, prompting my son’s girlfriend to say, “Welcome to 2013, Rick.” Anyway, I wanted to know if any of you performing musicians here use i-Pads when you play to pull up guitar chord/tab/lyric sheets, or other ways you use them for musical applications. Please explain as if you were talking to a three year old child (who probably knows more about computers than I do). I sense that this little box has a lot of potential for musical applications, but I don’t know where to start looking for them. What I’d REALLY like to do is go “paperless” with lead sheets. Thanks!

The iPad or other Tablets are becoming the norm for PDF cheat sheets and can actually be useful for things like backing tracks, click track and controlling lights.

To the future... and beyond!

OnSong goes beyond simple .pdf management & allows you to directly import Chords/Lyrics directly from th'Internet, transpose Keys(on th'Fly) and gives you the ability to "Share" with other Bandmates iPads (via Bluetooth) :

There is a product called the iKlip Mini, which fastens to your microphone stand and holds your iPad Mini. What I do is pull up my songs on Ultimate Guitar or Chordie, copy and paste them to Pages (which is I think standard on new ipads now.) The nice thing about doing it this way is you can edit wrong words, put it into two columns so it all fits on one page, etc... I generally have mine sorted by title in alphabetical order, though you could put your songs in a sequence to reflect a set list. It makes it really fast to go to the next song when playing live.

It is INVALUABLE to me. I've even used it to the extent of being able to pull-up a request I don't know, using the bar/restaurant internet and play it right then and there!

The nice thing too about the iKlip is it's very uninvasive, unlike a bulky music stand and music binders.

You can see me using it at www.livebait.weebly.com

All the best and enjoy your new toy!

Cliff, Woody and Dave -

Thanks! See, I knew I could count on you guys to help point me in the right direction. You've actually USED some of these items. I did some web surfing, and can't get any really good descriptions on how things like OnSong work and what they can do. There are a couple of you tube videos I want to see when I get home tonight. Fortunately my son, who works as co-ordinator of the Music and Theater Department at Xavier University, also designs, builds and maintains websites and is a computer wizard. So I CAN get help.

Woody, who knows? Someday I may actually utilize backing tracks and lighting. Cliff, you sound like the go-to guy for OnSong; I may be picking your brains from time to time if I go that way. Dave - is the i-Klip mini pretty secure? It would be great not having to mess with klunky music stands.

A couple of (maybe) dumb questions: I have a number of song sheets saved as MS documents. Can I export these? Also - there's a six inch thick binder and (literally) reams of loose paper (you collect a lot of crap when you play music for 42 years). Can these be scanned and exported also? I'm getting revved up.

And I would assume that you guys have a couple of pit bulls near your stage set up to discourage people from trying to rip off your devices?

Onsong is well worth the $13 (tho I think it was $10 when I bought it).
I get the best results with word docs by saving them as plain text with no tabs or fancy formatting, then importing them. I haven't had good luck with scans (need OCR -sketchy as best) or PDF (can't edit after import). I did import a bunch of songs using OCR, but I had to go back and edit them. Luckily the editor in Onsong is quite nice once you get the hang of it. Copy and pasting a song from the web then editing it can be done in just a few minutes.

You'll probably want a Bluetooth foot controller as well (hands-free page turning). Cliff uses the Airturn, I use the Cicada, both work well.

Wow, this site is always educating as well as entertaining! I'm now looking into the OnSong....very cool!
The iKlip is very strong and secure. The only possible negative would be you have to take it out of whatever protective case in order to slide it in.

Here's the site: http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/iklip2/

You'll want the mini-me for the ipad mini.

My overall personal feeling though, is to get your songs into the ipad in the easiest way possible and to try not to be glued into it as much as possible. I think the best music is memorized. I try to use this as a tool to help me learn new songs and to have obscure songs handy in case they're asked for. Ideally, when I've learned the song well enough, I choose not to even use it. Still very nice to have!

Waskel, Stephen, thanks. I've heard of AirTurn, but what is Cicada? I'm intrigued.

Dave, I prefer to memorize too, and I have over 200 songs memorized, but playing solo and in two bands, sometimes I need help!

And wait theres even more...... for recording you can now control Logic or Garageband on the computer with the free iPad Logic Remote App.
Start/Stop/Rewind/Record... Play and adjust tracks as needed in real time. No putting down the Ovation to run the keyboard/mouse

Wow – my head’s spinning. Thanks for all the info, guys. I downloaded Garage Band (free version?) when I got my i-Pad. I’ve always been curious about GB, but this is my first Apple device. Question - can you EDIT on Garage Band on i-Pad; e.g., punch-in, etc.?

Cliff - which Mackie mixer is it, if you know?

My 2 favourites (after OnSong [or Chordpro Songbook]) are Loopy and Amazing Slow Downer.

I have a question about the Cicada and AirTurn footpedals when used with OnSong. Do they just toggle from one song to the next, or can you (if you have a song that's longer then one page) toggle between pages within that song? And, if so, is it easy to get back to the index??

Many thanks and thanks Rick for bringing up this topic!

I don't know why people need page turners for OnSong and the like.  I thought the whole idea was to use the scroll function. Set the song to the right length and hit 'play'. Doesn't matter how many pages the song has .

Save your money and get a midi foot pedal (or BlueTootg) and use 'Loopy' - serious fun - http://loopyapp.com

They've got a great, informative  forum too - http://forum.loopyapp.com

With the cicada, if the song is longer than one page, a right pedal touch causes it to scroll down. From the bottom of the page it moves to the next song in the set. Left pedal moves backward in the same way. Have to touch the screen to get to the set or song index.

Not sure about the Airturn, Cliff could tell you better than I.

Will OnSong show special fonts? I use a special phonetic chinese font that i can get my iPad to show in an imported PDF but in other apps it shows nothing or a traditional chinese font without the phonetic symbols.

Thanks for any info!

Yeah - I'm afraid I've gotten lazy. Over the course of a 4 hour night of playing, though, it's nice to have a little help...
