I've never played an Ovation, but I can tell you they're a piece of crap. No self respecting musician would be caught dead playing one. If I wanted to make music on something plastic, I'd get my wife a boob job.

I just recently started doing those horizontal shots for my new website (coming soon), but the 2080 is in Phoenix right now, and the 12 String is a ferry ride away at MWoody's, so I made due. There were a couple that didn't make the post too.

 

Not too much bashing going on yet... surprising.

I think that once a bunch of Woodbox owners admit to Loving their Ovations as much as their Martins, Guilds, Breedloves, Larivees and such, It just deflates the Ovation-bashers.
Just like other bullies and bigots, they don't want to voice their opinions without a crowd. Y'know?

Location: New Jersey		What bothers me the most is alot of these bashers never even tried an Ovation; I have played Martins, Gibsons, Taylors and a ton more. Is anything other than an Ovation junk? Can't and wouldn't say that- however, I CAN say that of the Taylors, Martins, and Gibson I DID play- My '07 feels and sounds the best to me. And if we are comparing price? - AGAIN IMHO, a 3k Ovation is at least a match for a 3-5k Martin/Taylor/et.al. I just can't wait to try an Adamas- never had one of those babies in my hands-and I'm kinda skeered to play one...cause then I'll have to have one. Especially love that reverse blue burst...Oh Lawd!

A few years back a former coworker brought in his brand new Taylor acoustic electric (sorry I forget the model) I thought it looked nice, nice woods, plain - don't recall much (if any) inlay, stock, nothing custom or made-to-order, the neck and action were comfortable and I thought it sounded nice both plugged in and straight acoustic. When he finally divulged how much it cost my spontaneous reaction was to exclaim OUCH!... over $4K!!!

I couldn't help thinking he had suffered a case of more dollars than sense. IMO YMMV

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent		I had a Taylor 714-ce several years ago that I liked very much. It developed a finish crack though and I let it go. I might get another some day as the cedar on rosewood works very well with the Taylor bracing I think. For the right price, that model was worth it.

I also bought an 810-ce dreadaught, sitka/RW. It was seriously comfy to play, and was very well built, but the tone just didn't click my gears at all. Taylor's voicing seems to lead with the mids and trebles, which is not what I want from a dreadnaught. I had a Martin D-42 that just thumped out sound good enough to stick with me even though I replaced it with my Collings slope dread. As a result, I would love to give a martin OM-42 a bit of a spin.

Speaking of the Collings, it does what I think Taylor is trying to do with its dreads. The balance of all six strings is amazing for a guitar with this shape, BUT somehow the bass is very obvious without pummeling the other tones into submission. Honestly, I don't know how they did it! How can a guitar have robust bass and excellent balance at the same time?!

But back to Taylors, there are a few others I've played that I liked very much, but they are way up there price-wise. I would definitely consider a used 912-ce. I've played several and haven't plucked a dud yet. I'd never spring for a new one, but I think the used ones are worth the money if you are patient and careful.

All that being said, there are many reasons I own almost 20 Ovations and only one woodbox. If you are hanging out on this site, you've already figured them out for yourself.

Location: Hot Springs, S.D.		My OFC I has that great balance. The bass is big and booming, yet it doesn't over power the mids or the sparkly trebles. Plays better than any Taylor I've ever played, looks better than any Taylor I've ever seen. Then again, I've never seen a Taylor that was worth even half of what they are asking for them.

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains		A few years ago, I came close to buying a Martin OM-42 and a Taylor 914 cutaway (the only one that appealed to me). I ordered a custom Adamas and a custom Takamine instead. I may still someday find the nerve to buy the others, as well as a Collings. Someday. I'm darn pleased with my guitar options. I'm still monkeying around with amps. I just wished the sound engineers wouldn't be so inconsistent.

Location: Northwest Arkansas		The constant barrage of comments about Ovations from taylor(capitalization left out on purpose) owners is akin to Ford versus Chevy. Number one it's an acquired taste and B: I'm not paying that much money for a guitar that so and so star plays. 90% of the time the guitar is given to them anyway. taylor Swift is a good example. 3 chords and a capo. Right now taylor is the "flavor of the month". Macpherson is slowly taking over. Just watch TV. You'll see it. I hope to see Ovations, either worn by the star or played in the backgrond, a lot more

Location: New Jersey		I notice that the majority of the "famous" Ovation players/endorsers are not flavor of the month kind of folks, but folks who don't have to prove anything- they have remained respected and popular for the long haul. Glen Campbell, Melissa Etheredge, Al DiMeaola et. Al. And they have stayed with Ovation all that time. Must be a reason huh?
