I like it, it's pretty cool. For a hundred bucks more than the imports I got a nice USA Ovation. Stays in tune and sounds sweet hooked up. Any one have any experience with this geetar?

Joined: March 2008 Posts: 8 Location: Los Angeles | Hello all, another newbie here. I sort of stumbled on a Balladeer (1861-LX) too and thought, it was finally time to get my first Ovation, the price, like alleghenymountain's, was just too good to pass up. I do have a question about the pre-amp. Are the OP Pro and OP 20 pre amps interchangeable? When I looked online the 1861 comes with the OP Pro pre but my guitar has the OP 20 pre and while it fits, it doesn't seem to work. Thanks in advance for any help! T.

There must be someone around you that has an OP Pro that you could try in there. It should fit in the hole, it's just a question of whether the electrical connections line up. Welcome to the board. We have several members from the LA area that should be able to help you out.

The best way to get a correct answer is to take a few digital photos, write down your serial number and model number, and contact customer support at the factory, aka "The Mothership". They can give you the straight story if no-one here can.

Seems like someone did a fairly technical comparison of the specs of a couple of the preamps a year or so ago. There's a little bit on the Ovation site. I like the OP Pro because I can see the tuner. The earlier ones the print is too small.

Mmmm  I don't have an OP20, but I have an OP30 and an OP-Pro... The connector on an OP-Pro has eight contact tabs in a rectangle... The connector on the OP30 has six contact tabs. I am sure that I could switch them size-wise (but I don't wanna fry a diode)... The contacts would not line-up! If you look inside the pre-amp hole, and see eight shiny contacts in a slot, 4 top/4 bottom, then it should be an OP-Pro. And if the contacts don't line-up on your OP20, that is why it won't work. Not to be rude, but the OP20 is a pretty basic pre-amp with a tuna. About equal to the OP4BT... Mothership wouldn't put that on an LX... Why put a cheapie pre-amp on a top-of-the-line Ovation? Someone switched it.

For what little I use them, all the Ovation preamps are great. The preamp on the OFC seems to put out the most volume, even though it looks like the old 2 knobbers.

I didn't see that you had gotten the correct pre-amp until after I posted, then I had to run before I could edit... Anyway, I am happy that you got yerself a nice Balladeer... LX no less. We will be waiting for pics...

There's a guy across the line from you named Al. He has Lost Art Vintage. You should visit him sometime. And the lightweight super-shallow bowl, that's just splendtastic. I didn't get a case for that guitar, now beat me up over it, but I realized the people at the place of purchase were about as witty as a rotten zucchini. I tried but they said, dude, the tag says it doesn't come with it. I was basically the only one in the store and the two guys that acted like they were working asked me within the span of oh ten minutes, "so dude, where are you from?" This shop is two hours away and I was in that city that day, so hence I went. The nice shop here has tons of acoustic guitars and a room of the sacred Taylors, Martins, Gibson, Larivee, etc.. No Ovations though, and the only other place here that has them always has low end in. Although they have a 1984 Collectors that only has one ding on the headstock for 899.99. Otherwise it looks like it is brand spanking new. So needless to say I was super run down by the time I got there and wasn't arguing with someone over a case at that point. So, do Ovation hard-shell cases have to cost 120?
