I got a few emails and PMs last week after I sold off my Ovation Book Mando. "You're out of your freaking mind" "How could you" "You suck".

Well I could not justify having more than 1 mando and frankly this little number below had really caught my fancy. The Ovation is a fine mando for plugged in work but I really wanted something more traditional with monster acoustic tone. I had heard a lot of good things about Collings mandos and about a year ago finally got to play a few. I was totally blown away. I knew right then and there that I'd have one, and not some entry model. I was gonna have a full blown F-style with all the trimmings. The problem is that these things cost between 5 and 10. And I ain't talking hundred.

Then last October I got to visit the Collings factory and see how these are made. Certainly one of the most impressive things I have ever seen. The intricate attention to detail is stunning and you just can't beat the sound. So that was it, I was having one. Resigned to the fact that I would have to jettison the Ovation, the hunt began. And then about 2 months ago I finally tracked down the one for me. It's a model MF-5, top of the line except for varnish. It's an old one, serial number 88 and it sings like a freaking angel on steroids. Despite the loss of my beloved Book Mando, I could could not be happier.

Hey, 2 out of 3 ain't bad! :D

Seriously nice mando, Toby. I'll bet it does sing.
Not sure about that cutaway, tho. Looks kinda like it lost an ear in a knife fight...

I was at the factory tour with Dave and the way they make these things and the precision and detail that are put into every one of them is truly amazing.

Those MF5s are awesome.

Wabbit and I were both thinking of the same 2 out of 3. Nice mando, but if I ever get one (which is unlikely) it will be by A.L. Smart.

Excellent. We expected nothing less from you, Dave. For me personally, I can't imagine owning anything that can't be plugged in. The color and patina on yours is very special.

Very nice. Love the headstock ... I'd like to be able to wear my hair like that. Pretty cool tail, too.

Very nice. Mine is #290 and those that have seen it and played it know Dave speaks the truth.
Congrats!

and from someone who is always looking for a 1 3/4 neck on a guitar...

course, after playing a mando, even a Hurricane would feel like a wide neck.

I'll do some more photos. It's actually not as dark finish in person. The back, sides and neck are flamed maple.

Next week it goes back to Austin for minor spa treatment. I got it "cheap" knowing it needed some buff'n'stuff. It needs refretting, getting a bound pickguard, waverly tuners, new nut, and the face of the headstock is getting reshot and buffed. Plus a new case.

Sorry to boast, but you just wouldn't believe the freaking SOUND of this thing. Even in MY feeble hands.

Just don't drool on the mando. Those saliva spots are a bugger to clean up.
