Good professional touch, cry and keep going.

Are they there to dance and have a good time, or are they reflecting during a prayer at a funderal? Is it within the first ten minutes of the first set of the evening, or the third encore? Having some experience in programming, it is always best to vary the set list order and give the audience an opportunity for some wide swings in their emotional response to the songs, but in moderation. Every song is perfectly appropriate under the right circumstances. Pick and choose accordingly.

I did see few people wipe their eyes. The once a month open mic there was NOT actually in Thomaston Opera House its old fire station that was next to it. I know a bit the stix but had expected this in the mens room btw Everyone was mic'ed and My 1980 Legend represented Ovation very well. It better than most of the vintage Martin and Gibsons almost every one else had. I noticed I was only the guitar the mic vol had had to lowered for.

I would not perform a song that affected me so much that I was not in total control.

Most of the songs I do are pretty miserable and some are about completely hopeless situations so I kinda had to get hardened to it because I do them for what I believe to be the value of the lyric content. One way I found early on to to avoid the emotion was to think of the line that was coming up before I sang it which somehow took the sting out of it. I don't need to do that anymore because now I think it's really self indulgent to get all carried away with yourself and think that it's all about you. If you have something worthwhile to say you'll realize that you have to get it across without feeling all sorry for yourself and putting yourself before the song. You think that circle song is sad - that ain't even barely on the first step of being sad. I like this version of it though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RIn-ov1yJM
