Top of the evening all!
I have an electric ovation (strictly electric solid body)and know nothing about it so i`ve turned to you all for help.I`ve looked on "ovation.com" and "orionbluebook.com" and a few other sites to find out history and rough value cause i`ve concidered trading it in.The only marking i can find on it is:E17298 which isn`t listed anywhere (sites)that i can find. When i checked the codes with the usual breakdown,it doesn`t match the guitar at all but it`s all original equip, nothing altered.Does anyone have any info they could share about it?

A picture would be worth more than a thousand words! Take a look in these websites:

www.ovationtribute.com
www.ovationgallery.com

You can also sift through the Gallery that several Members have put up (Green Bar to the left).

Then tell us what you have.

And Welcome!

mwoody,
Thanks for the sites.I`ve determined it`s from the viper family. It looks exactly like pic of the "greyburst".The code doesn`t match up to the color(solid black) but it`s the right style as like the 1271.
Thanks for your help

Goose, let's see some pics. Is it original? What do you want to trade for?

Captain,At this point i don`t know what it`s worth. As soon as i figure out how to post pics i`ll put some up.It does have some flaws but nothing unsightly and the case is alittle ratty.I`ve never played it.The neck appears to be true and no buzzing on any frets.I barely have time to pick up my acoustic(yamaha cheapy but plays well).

Goose, you may want to run away really fast. A little over 3 years ago, all I had was a cheap but good Yamaha, which I still love. Now I'm here every day. There may still be hope for you, though. Get out now!

Or better yet, take Jason's two, or another trade on a good Ovation acoustic. Next thing you know, you'll be wanting to know how to keep it from slipping off your lap, what string tubes are, and whether llamas really do taste like chicken.

The fact is, Vipers are very good guitars, and still very affordable. A check on the 'bay will tell you they generally run in the $400's in decent shape. Greyburst may be a little more desirable to some than the more common finishes.

You can post pics in the "Member Access" section - http://www.ovationfanclub.com/membersmenu.asp

It's a Viper. Can't tell if that's the original finish but they did come in black. The pickguard looks painted in the photo, it should be a 3-ply black-white-black. Looks like it's been used well, but probably still has lots of life in her.

Well used, yes, pickguard painted,no,it is original and black. The photos didn`t do much justice as i hadn`t polished it up at all.Pulled it straight from case and snapped away. The back stamp although not clear in photo says E17298

Wow. That's more of a guitar than I thought you were going to show us. I like it. Here's my $.02 - Keep it, because (1) you won't get enough for it to buy a guitar that plays as well. And (2) you'll have a great sounding guitar that's unlike anything anybody else has. (3) The value of these has been steadily rising for a few years.

But that's me. I will always want to have at least one electric guitar. If you don't care about electrics, trade it for the best acoustic-electric Ovation you can.

You're a winner either way, but you can't leave yourself Ovationless. That would just be wrong.

Captain
I think I`ll take your advise and hang onto it(sorry Jason). It is the only electric i have.I did have a Redenbacher a few years back that played like a dream but young and dumb,I sold it for pennies.I later found out it was an extremely rare guitar.Major ooops!
The guy that gave me this guitar bought it when he turned teen and is now in his upper 40`s(a couple years my senior).
I just pulled the strings off it and i`m gonna put the guitar polish to it and probably bring it to "play with the boys" this weekend.
I`ve still yet to find my model anywhere or a true value for it.It does have great action and i`ve still yet to put a amp to it!
Will see what the weekend brings.

Whoah! That's some design on the metal plate on the back of that guitar. It looks like a mountain climber reaching for the summit with the round back guitar bridging the gap between them. Pardon my naivete, but I must admit that I've never seen like it before.

Early neck plates were clean and the later were cast. There was an era of the "Roundback Skater Dude". I quit trying to understand anything 80's.

Goose, as a couple of people mentioned, it's a solidbody Ovation Viper (Model #1271). the E17298 number on the back is the serial number, placing manufacture date somewhere between Feb 1975 and 1980. Not to be confused with more recent Ovation Vipers which are chambered acoustic/electric guitars with peizo pickups (Model CV-68.)

For further details about this guitar, click on the "Reference" button along the left side of this screen, and choose the "Solidbodies and Storm Series" link. Then choose Viper from the drop-down menu.

Value varies widely with condition and whim. Search completed auctions at eBay for a rough idea. Checking just now, 3 recent sales were between $450 and $520. Also check the vintage guitar bluebooks, etc. Like Cap'n said, for what you could sell it for, you won't find something as nice to replace it with.

Best of luck with it and stick around for some fun!
