OH MY GOD!

Finding it increasingly harder to go back to my Ovations after playing the 1680, what's the point???

So after a 1687 maybe a 1687-9, gotta be in great condition and a good price ;)

Oh and if wide nut then even better!

Unfortunately I don't own a brown one but if you're interested also in a blue 1687 you can contact me.

Pictures are here: 1687-8

See, now I'm just the opposite. I've been to Adamii and find that I'm a wood top kinda guy (but I'll never sell my 2 Admaii -- OFC'er and Adamas I 12). But they're both just different flavors of great ice cream. Gotta go where your ear leads you.....

Yep, ice cream. I find that there are some things that just seem right with an all wood guitar and others just beg for the Adamas sound.

I'm more in Moody's camp. I wasn't overwhelmed by the sound of the Ute, but figured that all the OFC hype might have inflated my expectations. The OFC guitar and the Koa are wonderful, but the sound doesn't thrill me. I seem to get the most buzz out of playing the traditional Ovations with the spruce tops. I've got 5 of those now that really have the Ovation sound I fell in love with 30 years ago.

Sometimes it is difficult for anything to live up to the hype we generate!

I'm a spruce top man myself :) I love the 1537, 03C and 07C and probably won't part with them, like you say sometimes you want vanilla ice cream sometimes strawberry ice cream and sometimes even ice cream with whiskey and black pepper! (try it, it's lovely).

Perhaps my initial statement was a little over reactive but I do LUV the 1680.

There's always the new toy thrill, but if it continues for a long time, it's for real. It wore off on my 99 Collector's, but someone else liked it better than the rest of my collection, so I sold it to him. That was hard for me. I don't know that I'll do it again. I haven't really found one I didn't like.

I do love the sound of the 1680, but as stated, longevity tells the tale. If it hangs on as long as my Martins, (or the Josh White) then I'll be totally convinced.

I was going to suggest that TJ and I had different definitions of "a long time", at least in the context of guitar ownership. I only had the 99 for just shy of 3 years, so that isn't really that long for me. And I didn't sell it and buy it back during that time.

Maybe this is a little over generalized, but Ovation guitars are relatively inexpensive, relatively plentiful especially on the used market, and relatively easy to resell. So that lends itself to a lot of "churn and burn". Try this, try that, sell it, buy it, repeat as necessary. Trader Jim and some others are great examples of that, and I mean that in a complimentary way. Other types of instruments at other price points don't lend themselves as well to that kind of rotation. Just an observation.

TJ, is the JW an original or a reissue?

Paul, no, it's a reissue, and a darn fine sounding guitar. It's the second one I've owned and the better sounding of the two.

Thank you Dave, uh Toby. That is exactly my madness. I've gotten to try out most of the line and found a few that I would consider giving a permanent home to. It's been fun, and I've managed to make my wife come to expect it along the way. Win win situation, the way I see it. :D

Whether there's a method to your madness or madness to your method, we'll still poke fun at you. Some people trade cars every couple years, others keepp one forever. Different strokes. I tend to become way too attached to my material posessions. I realize I have that form of madness, so I try to make sure I'm going to like it before I buy it. Sometimes that causes me to miss out on something I could have really enjoyed.

Thanks Mark, I was beginning to think you thought I was a flake. ;)

Actually, I think I'm at the end of my run. I now have two very nice Ovations (JW reissue and Balladeer reissue) two nice Adamas (1680 and 1681) two nice Martins (CEO-5 and 000 17S) and a very nice Tacoma all Koa along with a Yamaha silent string and a Blueridge OM. I may have reached my nirvana. Now, what you guys going to do for entertainment if I stop selling and buying? You're going to have to start picking on Beal. :D

Saw that, I did predict that a while ago. I'm staying away though.
