I dont know about you people but when I was a little fella I really looked forward to days or nights like Halloween and Christmas.

How late did you stay out when you trick or treated?

I used to go out for hours coming back home to empty my pillowcases full of candy 2 or 3 times .
What the Hell happened to a good night of fun, I only get 40 to 60 kids trick or treating in my neighborhood anymore.
It seems like the alot of the traditions that we had when we were younger have not carried on to our kids or grand children.
Whats up with that?? Are we that paranoid of bringing our kids out for a night of fun & fantasy or have the kids of the world changed that much that they do not care about these things anymore.

I think that the Parents have changed for the bad press that has come over our great nation.

I still see it in the eyes of the younger kids all dressed up in their costumes receiving a treat that they are having the time of their lifes for a few brief minutes or hours on Halloween.I just dont think that the dress up at school for the day or school party can replace the traditional walking house to house at night through the neighborhood screaming out trick or treat at each door .

What the heck has happened?

Whats next? Will we soon give up on Christmas?

I want the 60s back!!!

Its almost scary to think about.

Thank You for the theropy . GWB

They DID give up Christmas. It is now "Happy Holidays" not "Merry Christmas"... Remember, law-suits about Manger Scenes in the Town Square. It is now a Holiday Tree, not a Christmas Tree.
We all must be Politically Correct now! That is why Mister Magoo's A Christmas Carol ain't on the tube anymore. And that was a Good cartoon.

You know what?? It doesn't matter what "they" do... only whatever traditions you carry on in your own home... It's only as good as we make it for them.

About half the kids that came to our house tonight were teenagers over 15. Several didn't wear costumes and many of those definitely didn't need any candy. Probably the only exercise they get is trick or treating.
There is so much publicity about child molesters and kids being poisoned that parents don't let their kids out much anymore. Plus a lot of the kids don't like to get off their butts. I never see kids outside playing like I used to. If there parents didn't take them to soccer practice, they'd never leave the couch.

There were alot of kids in my neighborhood... and alot of parents to go along with them. The kids don't care and the homeowners feel a little safer.

First, it seems christmas (the commercial aspect of it) lasts longer than it did in the 60's, so if you're worried about it being eliminated, the commercial interests won't let it die. Thank God. Or Zeus. Yes, thanks be to Zeus.
Second, the 60's weren't all that great, we had a president from texas, getting us deep into a war, there was divisiveness in society ... oh crap, it's the same.
Third, halloween ... are there any halloween songs besides the monster mash?

That is cool that the parents tap a beer and go along with the young-uns. Thats the way it should be.I gave out Glo-Sticks tonite and the Kids and the Parents faces lite up like a Christmas Tree and I had a bunch of parents tell me what a neat thing it was to give out something that was thoughtful of the security of their kids night out.
THAT IS WHAT THE HOLIDAYS ARE ALL ABOUT !!!

Lets get back to that type of living life. GWB

Well this was out first Halloween and apparently it's a big deal here, but not at homes. We only had a few kids stop by, maybe 10. But, on the other hand, they apparently closed the main streets downtown for trick'o treaters and there were trick or treat hours at the mall after that. We were seeing people walking around stores and such in costume (customers and employees) as far back as last Saturday!! Much different for the droves of kids in the neighborhoods back in Maryland. I think next year we are going to have to be "that" house. The one that's all decked out. There was one house in our neighborhood back in Maryland that must have had a storage unit just for Halloween stuff. Fenced graveyard, full-sized mummy's the whole nine yards.. the whole yard. Bats in tree's, gargoyles on the roof, you get the idea. Next year, that will be us for this neighborhood.

Normally we only have a few families that come from other areas...tonight, none. Obviously, a lot of sweets left over.

The last place I trick-or-treated in my life...
I was going home from a Halloween Concert, dressed in black, with a riding cloak, ala Alice Cooper. I was about sixteen ('73). This old dude (35 or so) was watching TV drinking beer around midnight. I saw his lights, and him through the window in front of the tube. So I trick-or-treated him. He was SO glad! He had made carmel popcorn balls, but not one little kid came to his house. So we sat and watch Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, drank beer, and ate popcorn balls. Ah, Memories!

great memories of this holiday as a kid. We lived in the city (we didn['t know it was a ghetto) when you have 50-75 homes in a block you get the knack of jumping over the porch railings down and you fill up your bags rather quickly.

some businesses would give out the nickle bags of wise potato chips and you always hit there twice and the homes that gave out the big hershey bars you would hit twice also. when you came home to dump out your bag you would shift through and get out all the mary janes, clark bars and klein's lunch bars and have mom give them out and save the hershey and musketeer bars (which my old man would call mouseketeers no matter how many times we corrected him) for us.

the weeks before we would prep and make a costume, old military uniforms from wwII or korea, ghosts out of a sheet, or my favorite the hobo or bum. (I guess being a homeless person does not have the same appeal) I remember being my favorite mexican (speedy gonzalez) one year with a straw hat a striped blanket over my shoulder and dungarees. I guess that would be politically incorrect now too.

Suzi gives out the treats at our house and mostly the costumes were store bought and non creative. Most kids come with their parents unless they are teenagers. the teenagers seen to think it is ok to put on a hockery or baseball jersey as a costume. One very creative kid just wore his catholic school uniform. (the brain power it took to do this was staggering)

I find most of the immigrant kids and parents most appreciative. quite ironic isn't it. Of course there is the group of parents that tell their kids not to come to our house but that is a whole different issue.

I've always been partial to alternating between Rockapella's "Zombie Jamboree" (not really halloween, actually Calypso Carnival, but thematic) and Bach's "Toccata and Fuge in D Minor" on a boom box in the yard.

We ended up with about 120 kids which is about double the usual showing. This is probably 5 or 6 times the number of kids in the neighborhood but ours is one of the only subdivisions with fair density in our rural area. We get a lot of kids bussed in. I always love seeing them.

It's a big deal at our house. My two kids, wife and I all take part. I was an iPod (check it out at http://jas.familyfun.go.com/crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=11534 . This will be a good memory for my family.

Then you'll be looking for stuff like this > Haunted House Decorations . One of the staff at our place spends half the year working on props for her yard. Gravestones, coffins, fog, sound effects, dead bodies slumped over the wheel of her car.

'Other' hallowe'en music includes the sound track from The Rocky Horror Pictures Show. (Who can't wait to do the Time Warp Again?)

"I find most of the immigrant kids and parents most appreciative. quite ironic isn't it." (quote-Alpep)

In alot of their cultures, especially Mexico, Holloween is a Big Deal. Day to Honor fore-bearers and friends who have gone before. Oriental cultures too.

Here, I got of the train from work, and all the Chistmas lights are on. Only 54 shopping days left...
