I've been building up quite the calouses lately, playing a little bit every night for the past few weeks. Now I think another problem has surfaced. My ring finger has developed quite the "club" tip. I don't have the sensitivity to really feel whats happening on chords like D/Dm/D7 etc. Seems like the callous is TOO big now, flatening out and touching/muting surrounding strings. Its also very hard and slick so it doesn't grab the string that well anymore.

So when they get this big, do you just sand it off and start over? Whats the solution? I do enjoy the lack of pain now, but not at the expense of playability.

Whats your thoughts on this?

Usually when I developed callouses (from both bass and guitar), I also developed a groove that the string fit in quite nicely.

Don't think I've ever had one turn into the monster you talking about/

or sand it with a nail file, or get a 1 3/4 neck.

Mine are peeling. I do what Fred suggests. Kind of replaces chewing the fingernails on the right hand.

Use a good hand (or foot if they're really bad) lotion, rub it in to the calluses and let it sit for a bit, then use a nail file to reduce and smooth the calluses out, then rub in bit more lotion. This softens 'em enough that you can get a good purchase on the strings. I usually do this 2-3 hours before a gig - not to exceed twice a week. Important - don't overdo the file. I use one of those that has multiple surfaces so that you can end up with our calluses smooth enough that not only do they not catch on the strings, but they slide easily with (somewhat) reduced squeak.

I use a double-sided emory board (one side rough, one smooth) to shapen & smoothen 'em out . . .

With all the crap I've given my wife over the years about how she spends so much time and money in the bathroom, if she caught me sanding my calouses, I'd never live it down. I'd have to scratch her with my fingernails--right hand only.

I wish the callouses that I build on my fingers stay a while. Unfortunately, like dead skin ... they peel off easily. Before I know it, it feels like I'm starting all over again.

Yep I keep some of my wifes emery boards spread around in my cases. I also have stopped chewing my picking fingers nails and have gone high tech with the clippers. When I get them nails just right; I can fly, when I don't; I miss or they get caught.
I don't give a Dam who see's the emery boards or the clippers. They make a difference.

Now to explain the lipstick and the women's dresses!!!!!

I think I'm getting callouses in another place from sitting on this board all the time. Pretty soon I'll start asking my wife if these pants make my butt look big.

If you're REALLY secure in your manhood, go down to one of those nail salons and have 'em put a set on your picking fingers. They don't break or chip and a set will last you a month or so. The place I go will do the three fingers and thumb for $10.00. Use your clippers for your fingering hand. So... let's see, in my gig bag you'll find clippers, lotion, multi-surface file and a receipt to the nail salon. hmmm...
