Location: Pewaukee, WI | I've rescuing an '89 1869-5. The rosette is gone and it's got about 7 finish cracks (none through the wood, I don't think). Anyone had a factory refinish done, and what did it cost? Any idea on the cost of a new rosette?

Location: Upper Left USA | You need their price but I remember as a ball park that standard Rosettes are $100 and Abalone are $300. To finish the top is $350 which removes the neck and replaces/resets the bridge.

Location: Pewaukee, WI | It's an 89, so it has the raised rosette. Looks like someone pried it off. Just the glue remaining, and about an inch of rosette by the neck. Thanks MWoody, that's the kind of information I was looking for. Now I know how much I have to save before I send it in for repairs. |

Location: Minden, Nebraska | I have an 1869 that had a slightly separated top crack I sent in for a refin. I think it was around $350, but the bonus was that it needed a neck reset and that automatically was done and the frets were dressed. IMHO, buy the less expensive rosette unless you feel the need to have it restored to original. But by that time you may end up spending more on it than you might have had to spend for a used one in great shape. |

Location: Carle Place, NY | I had my 1619 at the factory for a re-finishing of the top and new electronics (OP-Pro). Cost was $650. The factory replaced the abalone rosette and the carved bridge, filled in the hole for the old FET pre-amp and repainted the bowl in the process. Re-finishing the top on a Custom Legend will require replacing the bridge. Paul B is correct in that a nice used 1869 can be had on eBay for $550-$600. It all depends on how much you like yours. I had the top re-finished in New England Burst. Originally it was Tobacco Burst. If you really like your guitar, and maybe are considering changing the color, the $350 or so that the factory will charge may be worth it.
Your 1869 is worth about $300 on eBay even in the condition it is in, as long as you have an O case for it.
I'd send it to the factory for an estimate. Email Kim Keller (kkeller-kmc@kaman.com)for a return authorization number. As far as saving up for the repair, it's going to take about 3 months and you don't pay until it's finished. The factory takes credit cards too.
Another factor to consider is that you take a chance on any guitar that you buy on eBay. Your guitar will come back perfect, like new from the factory |

Location: ranson,wva | im getting ready to send my 1118-4 in after the new year to get a new neck,3peice top and rossette....as it is it has a repacement top and a different neck that someone made. the top has a few cracks and is starting to belly at the bridge. i could probly get a replacement for less that the restoration will cost but i realy like the guitar...jason |

I'm thinking of doing the cheaper rosette, or hopefully stumbling on one that someone has as spare parts. Jason??? Any rosettes in the parts drawer?

Location: ranson,wva | ive got a few matrix rossettes but they look like shit..thats why they aint on my matrix's..lol i tried to heat and lift one off of a balladeer but it just cracked so i said the heck with it and glued it back down. the next one i get with a fubar top(wich should be here next friday) ill cut the top out and send it to you..jason |
