I purchased a Custom Legend (1769-4) 11/3/89 through ABC Music store in Burbank. Ca. Up until that time a DEEP BOWL, CUT AWAY, was never produced. The Ovation factory informed us that they was setting up a new line to product the Deep Bowl Cutaways. Ovation informed us that if I were to place my order at that time, I would get the first guitar off the line, I placed my order. I have a letter from Kaman Ovation guitar company from John M. Budny stating that this guitar was one of the first 25 guitars first produced (they produce their guitars in batch's of 25). I also have 3 labels that can replace the label inside the guitar stating, Hand selected, that it is a Custom Guitar by Ovation & that is a Custom guitar for J D Roberts. Is this of special value

Not the guitar, but if you have John Budny's autograph, it could be worth something.

The label states "a Custom guitar for J D Roberts"...
Well, if you ever become famous, who knows?

Welcome JD. I take it that you meant no cut away deep bowl legends were produced before 89?

There is probably a very small group of people who would pay more to have a label like that, but there are probably many more who would say they see no value in having a guitar made for someone else.
My golf clubs say "Made especially for Mike K____". All I know is that he had to be a better golfer than me, but if the clubs were any good, he'd have kept them. The only value to me is that I can excuse my poor play by saying that the clubs were made for him instead of me.

Welcome JD! It’s always very nice to have provenance to accompany a guitar; it the guitar is in excellent to near mint condition, it would be of interest to keep those extra labels in an envelope to accompany the guitar should you ever sell it. It is condition that creates value, along with a particular desirable model. Defiantly a nice item to have: congrats and welcome to the club/forum/zoo...lol

Cutaways were available on most models, including the Custom Legend, around '82/83.

It seems to have taken some time for Ovation to have determined there was a market for a deep bowl cutaway production model. And some production models are comparatively rare (not rare, per se) due to the number made. I think the #1769 is one.

Cutaway lineup in June 1983 was:

1661 Balladeer - deepbowl
1667 Legend - Deepbowl
1677 Legend - shallowbowl
1669 Custom Legend - deepbowl
1674 Country Artist - Shallowbowl
1663 Classic - Deepbowl

Note that shallowbowl here refers to the original "Artist" depth and not the supershallow, which was released only on the 83 collectors at first.

By '85 the cutaway Custom Legend had become supershallow and the deepbowl version was non-cutaway. So maybe this is a case of the deepbowl cutaway being discontined and then re-introduced in the late 80's.

I stand corrected, Paul, and it reveals the dangers of uninformed speculation! That's one reason I blog infrequently.

Why? It seems those are excellent credentials for a blogger.

I was told that the DEEP BOWL CUTAWAY did not exist until 1989. My order just happened to be the first order after the enitial setup of Ovations new DEEP BOWL CUTAWAY production line? I have a letter from Kaman to prove that fact. J D

Mmmh. Maybe there's something else that's special about the guitar. Can you post some pics, of the guitar from various angles and the lables, in the user gallery?

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

The most obvious exception would be the 1987 Collectors, which was most definately a deep cutaway.

As previous stated, there were in fact many models of deep cutaway introduced well before 1989. I don't doubt John's letter at all. But you have to realize that his entire LIFE is stuck in 1989 !!!

Regardless of what you were told, this is patently not the case, and Ovation's own literature and print catalogs support this.

They existed back around 82-83. Maybe it was the Custom Legend Cutaway that didn't come as a production model till 89.

JD, perhaps what they meant was that your guitar was one of the first 25 of that model (1769) they produced. I have a 1987 Collector, and it certainly is a deep bowl cutaway.
