Somewhere I read that ovations are likely to get warped tops within 3 years due to the different rates of expansion between the composite body and wood top.' And that this makes them a disposable item

Is there any truth in this

I have two wood topped guitars that are 25-30 years old, and neither has even a ripple of warpage. Sounds like you have bad info. I imagine you could make any guitar warp if you you didn't properly care for it.

Total bullshit. Yes there are forums on the internet where you could read such things. Doesn't make it true.

Dave

PS - Welcome to the club. Where is Townsville? I've heard of Toneville. Are they by any chance the same place?

Hobie - I'm so glad that you had the excellent sense to ask the question in a forum of people who have extensive actual (not theoretical) experience with real Ovation guitars. The answers you've gotten above summ up the truth perfectly. Things like you heard about Ovations come from people who are terrified of other people and companies who think outside the "box". That's probably why I like Ovations so much.

Actually, I heard that, unless the entire instrument is made out of the same species of wood, from the same tree; totally wooden, box guitars tend to have their tops split, fretboards curl, and their sides and backs separate because of the different expansion rates that multi-variate wood combinations exibit ... well, that's what I heard! :D

Lets, see. 33, 30, 29, 23, OK too much math for a Monday morning. No warps on those or any of the "newer" ones. My youngest Ovation is 7. No warped tops.

To be fair to Hobie, you may see older guitars where the top is not perfectly flat. But I think has to do with the odd-ball bracing patterns and is not at all related to the fact that the back of the guitar is made of plastic. Dave

The world is flat and Ovations are round. Only slightly on the Tops though!

True. On a couple of mine, if you look at the right angles you can see where the braces are underneath. Since I have no woodbox guitars, I have nothing to compare.

Yeah. What would YOU call it? I know, I've been fighting the lyrachord, microsphere, high-tech, poly schniz-nit, whateverdahell it is syndrome for 35 years. 99.9% of the world thinks the bowl on an ovation guitar is plastic, therefor it's plastic. It isn't my job or personal crusade to change the rest of the world's bigoted ideas about ovations. It's like trying to shove an ice cube into a parking meter. I know what I like, and THAT's all that matters.

It was truely a beautiful thing!

And then there were the old pay phones that you could drop a penny (or a nickle if you weren't that good) in and hit the coin return at just the right time as the coin fell and get connected.

As I looked at my 92 collectors, after removing shim after shim, sanding, and the top continuing to rise, and after seeing many pawnshop prizes, with the tops rising and seperating, I can't help but believe that there is a problem. Maybe the reason most of you guys haven't had this problem is because of the care you give your instruments. Maybe the problem with these pawnshop prizes is the way they were treated. I've just seen this too many times on mainly older ovations, not to believe something is going on. Granted, you see this on other makes just seems not near as often. I know this statment won't make me the most popular guy on the block, and I love my ovations and am looking foward to owning more, I'm just sharing my personal experience.

Peace,love,and hippie music :)

Gulfcoast, The problem isn't the top... It's the plastic. Trust me, I read this onthe Martin forum and I know those guys would not steer me wrong. Dave

PS - I honestly think the issue is/was the bracing. You don't see this "problem" on modern Ovations, X and A braced. And I really question if it is problem. So what if the top isn't flat. Maybe that makes it sound better?

It's not the care in my case. My 73 CA, I just got and it has cracks and a couple dents in the top, but I can't see any warp. The 77 Folklore has a little belly below the bridge. It had a brace that was coming loose and that may allow it to happen. The Classic has ripples where the braces are. Don't know how it was cared for during it's first 15 years, but the rest of the guitar is immaculate, so it may have sat in a case or hanging on a wall. I just figured that the cedar top was softer. Tired of looking for ghosts.

Thanks to all

Well those responses are reassuring. I will continue to look at getting an ovation.

Hobie

PS Townsville is in far north queensland, East Coast of Australia
