Wooden planes, bouncing bombs, pipeline under the ocean...
We brits have our moments.
Not forgetting Herman's Hermits, habeus corpus and right wing fundamentalist lunatics. We gave it all to the world in our usual selfless fashion.
Invading other countries for their mineral wealth was another favourite, but we have to give the credit for that to the Romans, though I believe we took it to levels that they and you can only dream of.

You Brits may have selflessly given us a lot of good things, and we thoughtfully gave you Tom Cruise and Madonna in return. ;)

Hey, we made plywood boats commonly called PT boats. They worked out pretty well. ;)

I read somewhere that those things could deliver the same bomb load to Berlin as a B17. Might have been in Murry Pedan's book "A Thousand Shall Fall."

Considering the extra crew, turrets and ammunition on a B17 it doesn't seem implausible particularly as the Lancaster, heavy lifter that it was, ran 4 R.R. Merlins so a Mosquito with 2 Merlins and no weight in the airframe should have been able to haul a few pounds.

* Mr. Pedan was a bomber pilot and survived 2 or 3 tours before becoming an instructor - his book is well worth reading IMO.

PT boats were made just a couple miles up the road in the original Chris Craft factory. They would test them in the North Channel at the end of my street. I would love to see one of those.

My father worked on B24 Liberators during WW-II so I have a mild interest in planes from that era.

The DeHavilland(sp) Mosquito was one bad ass plane. Fast, maneuverable and capable of multi-role missions. The Germans hated them.

The Spruce Goose sported eight 3,000 hp radial engines. (Actually made of mostly Burch plywood...)It's an extremely impressive bird to see in person.

We've got the goose up here outside of McMinnville. It is impressive.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Merlins could make Germany and back. The best ones (those in the P-51's) were made by Packard in Detroit. Before their introduction into the air war out of England, many, many B-17's were shot down for lack of escort.

Interesting piece. God, those things must have screamed. Hearing just one Merlin is enough to raise the hair on the back of your neck.
