Joined: December 2001 Posts: 10582 Location: NJ | or should I say an Adamist? my 18 year old nephew asked me to do a coffeehouse open mic with him last saturday. Well we learned a few tunes: suzi Q (ccr), knocking on heaven's door (bob dylan), 20th century boy (marc bolan t rex) and oh well (peter green fleetwood mac) so I deem we can do it and we get there. unfortunately there is a huge football game that night, someone was going undefeated or something like that, and the place was empty. Aside from the host there were no other people to play except us and about 6 people in the audience including the owner, and my sister and bro in law. We got up to the stage area to do our set and I was using an export Adamas 1 cutaway to which the MC remarked "oh you have an Ovation" I replied rather firmly "No it is an Adamas!!" I am sure it made no difference to him but it sure made a difference to me. anyway we were well recieved asked to play our set twice and asked to return. so this week's assignment is for my nephew to learn house of the rising sun, the thrill is gone , and maybe roadhouse blues. I just hate when you go to these things and the participants play the same tunes over and over again. PS crimson lake sighting as i was doing soem espionage in the local scam cash

Asking yourself "Who's freakin' idea was this we never close thing anyway?" Playing out with your nephew sounds like fun. Did he play bass or guitar? Try some Tom Petty stuff. Pretty easy to play, reasonable vocal range. And most people (assuming anyone is there) know the songs. Dave

Nephew played guitar or sorta bass lines on guitar. we may break out the bass next time. Petty is a good suggestion he loves his music. Idea was to get the kid out playing and performing in front of people, I have played way too many toilets in my life. (lenny bruce reference)

It worked but it had no zing like the ovations or ... adami. As for the crowd, mostly thai girls interested in singing along. That was the good part, though it rattled my wife a little bit.

I generally like t'give myself an hour to load-in/set-up/tune. I get there at 9, and the place is PACKED solid w/people! I look around, and all nine 48" LCD's that ring the place are tuned to the Giants/Pats game (90% of the patrons are adorned in GiantsWear). ". . Sh!t!! . . I thought that's not till T'MORROW!!! . ." (Shows how much I "follow" THAT crap . . .) GoodNews: After setting-up, I got to stand around drinking(for free) until about 11:30. BadNews: After 11:30, it was left up to me to KEEP as many people there as possible (and this is AFTER Their Team had LOST), and get them drinking, as they WEREN'T doing it during the Game, and the owners needed to re-coup some of that (and justify paying me). Played till 2AM(without a break) and drove home with my shirt wrung-out & in a plastic bag in my trunk. (who's idea WAS this t'go solo" again?? . . . )
