A great tuning to hang out in when you're having wrist problems. Be careful though, it may suck you in.

I seem to hang out in DADGAD and DADF#AD mostly these days mostly bsecause I'm just learning the last sections of "The Rose And The Pearl" (Doug Smith) and "The Irish Girl" (Adrian Legg).

Alternative tunings seem far easier to compose stuff in for me also

I'll have to play with that one Lanaki. The open tunings are pretty cool. I've got my DADGAD guitar strung with Pearse New Mediums, which seems to compensate well for the lighter tension.

Adrian Legg is amazing. Are these tunes available online?

I keep one guitar permanently tuned to open D (DADF#AD) - fun to just play around with, especially with double stops, and quite a few songs are easier to play and sound better in that tuning.

Same as g8r. I keep my Lowden S23C tuned to open D. Lowdens sound amazing in open tunings.

I usually have something tuned in either DADGAD, open D or open G. As Serge said, it's fun to play around with, and often inspiration strikes when in those tunings.

I used to use a bounch of weird tunings but found its just too much trouble live so now i use standard, DADGAD and DADf#AD. It keeps life simple but i do love open C.

But dropped D (DADGBE), double dropped D (DADGBD) are on the way from standard to DADGAD and so from a performance point of view you can go...

EADGBE
DADGBE
DADGBD
DADGAD
DADF#AD

And I recently realised (yes I'm slow!) that those open E (EBEG#BE) tunes can be played in open D!

Here's a pretty cool site (free with some limitations) that allows you to find chords in any tuning up the neck:

http://www.gootar.com/folder/guitar.html

Here's another variation of the same program with a slightly different approach, which can be modified to any tuning also:

Not only that, aything you can do in open D or E will work in open G or A also.

Open D/E is terms of intervals is: 1 5 1 3 5 1
Open G/A is: 5 1 5 1 3 5

So strings 6 to 2 in E/D have the same intervals as strings 5 to 1 in G/A. So you just move all the chord shapes and scales one string towards the floor. A whole new tuning without having to learn anything new.

If you already play in DADGAD (1 5 1 4 5 1) the same principle applies for Gsus4 tuning - DGDGCD (5 1 5 1 4 5)

Go to a Matt Smith clinic and he unlocks a ton of this stuff.

You're welcome Anita. I've used this for a few years, and it's become a regular go-to site for me. I keep saying I'm gonna buy it, but the free stuff serves me well.

capo 5th fret, a but of legato. Sound simple but as usual Adrian does his thing and keeps the lead line strong. Timing is especially important on this one!

There is one stenuous stretch in the C section but for intermediate players is a simple 'step up' with careful stretch practise.

Again a seemingly simple piece but only works if you get under the skin/into the brain of the man. It's not JUST about the notes.
