My take on EC's Lonely Stranger:

Lonely Stranger

Adamas I 1687-8 #4020-92 (main)
Ovation 1537-1 #301922 (rhythm fills)
Both guitars run thru a Baggs Para Acoustic DI then into Behringer Xenyx 802 mixer and recorded on a Zoom MRS-4. Vocals recorded with a Shure MXL990 straight to the mixer then the recorder. Mixdown done with Reaper, using Kjaerhus Audio Classic Compressor and ReaVerbate (reverb) VST plugins on the guitar tracks. Rendered as a 128-bit mp3 using Lame encoder. Backup vocals by our dear friend Kietha.

Nice! Real smooth sound.

Lotta work there. How many takes?

Did you mic the guitars at all or is it all direct from the preamp?

Keep it up Serge. Great stuff!

Thanks, guys. Bobbo, that was the 4th take on the Adamas, the second take on the 1537. No mic on the guitars, they were both straight to the board thru the DI. Still not happy with the (my) vocal and the mix could use some tweaking to optimize for poor speakers, but it's a start.

More soon, featuring Keitha on vocals so you won't have to suffer listening to me :D

Very nicely done. Can someone on this board please post some crappy recording so I don't feel so inadequate?

Whoa, nice job Serge! I can't remember you singing that low. Your playing just continues to 'mature'. More...

Very nice, G8r! You remind me of someone, but I can' think who ... more coffee needed to get my brain kick started ... even though it is half past noon!

Thanks for posting that. I really enjoyed it.

Thanks again to everyone for their kind words.

The link in the original post is no longer valid. After listening to it thru computer speakers instead of my Sennheiser studio headphones, I didn't like the mix, so I re-mixed and posted that up on ning instead.

Oh yeah!

Not sure how to ask this...It seems you 'lifted' your voice out of the guitars. It was more distinct. Whatcha do?

Johnny - I recorded each guitar and each vocal to separate tracks. Doing that lets you isolate and manipulate each "instrument" to get an acceptable mix (or add effects like reverb, compression, EQ). I actually had a fair bit of headroom on each signal, so I was able to boost the gain on the lead vocal track, at the same time cutting the gain slightly on the guitar tracks. That gave the vocal more punch in the mix without clipping.

Much clearer (better), Serge! NEVER use headphones for mixing or mastering, other than for your own rough mixes. For everything else get yourself a small pair of studio monitors.

You can also try to get the vocals and instruments at roughly the same level (vocals just a touch higher), then play with small changes in the EQ to bring the vocals 'forward'. 'Carving out' a frequency range in the instrument tracks where the vocals sit will help to make the vocals clearer while not overpowering the other tracks.
I'm sure the Magic Scot could explain it better.
