How about one of you people who have many many ovations posting some comparison test sounds somewhere on the social site. i.e. play the same thing (bit of strumming, bit of picking) on each guitar, plugged in and acoustic, and post them here so people can make comparisons between the different models.

It would need to be someone with access to a good microphone, so we are listening to the guitar and not the microphone. Would also be good to all be done with the same mic/system.

Of course the strings would have to be noted too. I tried Serge's suggestion of using the D'addarrio jazz lights and I hear more brightness and zing, then the bronze I usually use.

Dave did this with a little contest a couple years ago, playing the same tune on about 10 guitars and testing us to try to match the tune to the guitar. I liked the 1537 best, without knowing what it was. He had a couple Martins thrown in there, too.

I'll be glad to do it!
Give me a few days as this weekend is very busy: I'm running sound for Dallas Holm concerts Saturday night and Sunday...
But next week is better and I have both a selection of Ovation and Adamas guitars as well as several others; and a very good recording setup including great mic's thanks to Stephent28.

Hey Mike, be sure to include anything you have that is over, say, 50 years old.

Make sure they all are the same strings of about the same life and are all tuned the same. I't amazing how a few cents lower can make the bottom fuller.

I do this all the time at home. Since I use the same strings on all the guitars except the 2080 it's a pretty controlled experiment at least acoustically. Plugged in adds a bunch more variables.

As for a "good" mic, I'm shy a bit in that department. I have a cheapy MXR that I've been using.

Why Brad, I just might be able to take care of that request...

I use very good tuners so that should be no problem. Most of the ones I'll use have fresh sets of Elixir Nano Phosphor bronze...so it should all be on a fairly level playing field...I'll use every spare minute over the weekend and early next week...I may surprise myself and get it done sooner than early next week...hang in there with me and I'll post the results on a new thread...

BTW, I plan to do this all acoustic: that levels the field as well. Maybe later on we can do a comparison of preamps...

Another one I like doing is putting up the UKII against..... well anything. It's amazing how superior it is to ALL OTHERS.
If I have the time, I can do that...UK II against a Les Paul Custom against a Eric Johnson Strat...should be good...Cleav vs Clean and Distorted vs Distorted...

That is spooky. Mike quotes and responds to a statement not even made until a few minutes later.

Mike, please think hard and PM me the numbers for tonight's MegaLotto. I'll give you 10%. Thanks.

Hey Mike, just an idea...post the sound clips but don't reveal the models, then set it up as a poll and let the members choose which they think are the better sounding. Give them first, second and third choices that they have to decide upon based only on sound (without regard to discounting for computer speaker quality, etc.). Then after a week or so, you could reveal the models. A post by Dave similar to this a few years ago was one of my very favorites.

Mike this is great of you to do this. After you've finished, those with guitars not on "the list" will have to make a pilgrimage to your house to record their guitar. Then we can do another blind vote to hand out the mantle of the best sounding ovation. As new guitars are produced they will have to submit to "the sound test". Soon Kaman (Fender) will start sending you free "sample" models in the hope they'll get a good result.

I think Mike might throw in a couple of "ringers".

A few ringers might test our prejudices, it's all about what sounds best (which might be a matter of taste) but lets separate it from our expectations based on what we see.

OK, here is an update: I have several guitars recorded and plan to get several more (maybe get finished) tomorrow. Hope to everything up by the weekend..I overlooked the fact that I had the community VBS program this week...40 kids having a blast...
I'm excited about getting this sound comparison/contest in front of everyone: it should be interesting!
Stay Tuned!

I'm sure I speak for others as well as myself, Mike. We appreciate the work you are putting into this and await the test and results with baited breath.
