Hi all --

I'm buying a Celebrity Elite CE44 new from Sweetwater. I see that they are currently out-of-stock re actual Ovation hard cases so I have some time to think about a case.

What case would anyone recommend. While, it might be nice to have an Ovation case (two models available that fit a mid-depth body: Ovation 8158 and Ovation 9158 "Deluxe Molded Acoustic Guitar Case for Deep and Mid-depth Body Styles" +$20.00 -- a better case for under $100.00 wouldn't be a bad thing.

Happy to hear all thoughts and suggestions!

Jim in Maine

Zero Gravity case for $70
Backpack straps and thin pockets, plus an internal capo compartment.
I use these because I ride my bicycle to go play outside.
If you haven't seen one of these it is basically the foam innards of a hard case, wrapped in a gig-bag.
I can kill one of these cases in about 2 years... But I take it outside almost every day.
Plus, a Super Shallow will fit in this, and the 97 Parlor, and my CA X-Performer.

I use my Zero case every time for gigging with deep or mid bowl. I need a shallow one.

My my! The Zero cases certainly have their supporters! ;-) And, they really do look very good. You guys obviously feel their level of protection is right up there with a rigid clamshell.

Question: are they specifically made for Ovation instruments? I see even on Amazon when I search "Zero Gravity" that the photos of the cases all show "Ovation" prominently.

...I certainly like the price! Truth be told it's doubtful I'd be doing any air/baggage-checking-type travel with my CE44. Instrument would be in back seat with the dog and granddaughter or "stored" in a corner of the bedroom.

So it works in a back seat.

Ouch! ...but very impressive! ;-) I think I'd be re-orienting the guitar so that the neck pointed skyward / perpendicular. Sticking out to the side like that it seems more likely to be hit by something "passing by."

Shepherd Jim -  Ouch!

+1!  that looks like an O neck reset just waitin' for a narrow street

re: "which case" - I've got a few different O cases and (my 2¢ ) it seems to me like the newer hardshell O cases would survive a bit longer if an air cargo gorilla attacks, but baring that, I prefer the Zero G ...softer outside, but just as cozy inside ...plus some zippered storage pockets and backpack straps.

re: "stored in a bedroom corner" - If you really want to learn to play, I'd suggest not "storing it", but instead get a sturdy guitar stand (or wall mount) and keep your O in the room where you're most likely to play it. I find having my guitar nearby and easily accessed encourages me to pick it up, even if for just a moment or two, and practice.

Although ya may need to hide it away in its case whenever the grandkids visit.

If you're just going to be transporting it around town and auto trips, I'd go with the Zero Gravity Case. The nice thing about it is that it won't take up any space when you have the guitar out to play, on a stand, or on the wall. Hard cases are more durable, especially if someone else will be handling it or if it's going to travel as checked luggage, but they're more bulky and inconvenient. In the '60's, I traveled internationally with a classical guitar in a soft, padded, "gig bag" but I never checked it. The guitar never suffered any damage and I'm still playing it today.

One of my Ovations came to me with a hard, Road Runner case so I can't really justify getting the Zero Gravity case but if I had one, the hard case would sit empty in the closet.

Now, if your guitar was an Adamas instead of a Celebrity, I'd say get both the Zero Gravity and a hard shell case.

Just to agree with SOB and Banjo...
When I decided to learn to play in 2005 I got a $97 Lyon beginner's kit... (still got the guitar)
In it was a Lesson DVD in which the guy said to get a Stand and put it near the TV.
That way you will always remember that you have something better to do than watch TV.

i did that, too, from Miles' house north of Seattle to mine in Denver.  He had a bunch a shrink wrap and it carried like a charm.  There's a photo of the rig floating around here.  I prefer the soft vinyl/hard foam cases over the formed hard plastic factory cases because they are easier on door jams, woodwork, car upholstery, and anything else they're banged into.  My problem is storage, and I finally have that issue resolved.  More about that later.

Hey @Mike S. --

Where were you ten months ago? LOL

I went with the hard case Ovation 8158-0 OHSC option and am pretty happy. Although, if I'd only spent $50 for the case I would be even happier!!

Hi, Jim,
Ooops! Timing is everything, eh? Ten months ago, I was a member here on OFC, but I still had my (NOW SOLD) 1990 Elite 1768-4 for sale. The case I have for sale here now is the Ovation 8158-0 OHSC, it being the one that came with the 1993 Collectors Series I just bought. It's pretty much beat up/ done like dinner, but it does/did the job, and that's why the price is so low. I also bought a 2015? NOS 9158-0 case for this guitar. The only difference between our 2 cases is that mine has an Ovation logo inside AND outside the lid also, and uses a different handle. I think mine is possibly a factory second?, because there are some very slight cosmetic imperfections on it, (BTW,you have to look really close to see them?), and the OVATION dealer I got from said it was the last one available, as they are discontinuing this model. I posted the old case on both Kijiji- Ottawa, and Used Ottawa. com, without photos, and I already got some responses on it! Maybe a possible buyer, eh? We shall see. These new Ovation cases are the bomb, ain't they? I'm very happy with mine, too! It is worth every penny I spent on it, even with CANADIAN currency! Yes, Jim, $60.00 CAN for a used Ovation case would be bargain for you, but me , um, not so much? I'd be paying customs/ shipping fees to the USA etc., on it, till the cows home. I'm glad you got what you wanted. Who said, "You can't teach an old dawg new tricks." WRONG! Who was that guy?

This is incorrect information. These are available brand new. They are not discontinued.

As a matter of fact, if you buy a 40th/50th Anniversary, they are shipped with a 9158 case. The 9117 is available too (super shallow deluxe case).

The biggest difference between it and the 8158 aside from the logos and handle is that it's lighter.

Hi, Damon,
Thank you for correcting me. Yeah, I was, and am, that guy that being wrong, eh? Thank you also for not saying, "I TOLD YOU SO!" Some people would, but NOT a fellow OFC person, am I right? I kinda sorta maybe figured as much about these cases still being made and/or not made, because the music stores here in Ottawa, ON., CANADA, aren't big fans of OVATION guitars/cases. etc., to begin with, as far as I can tell. It took me 5 calls between 2 different stores, before I finally got to order the new case, about 3 weeks ago, now. I think they told me they weren't being made simply because they,"didn't want to get stuck with it, if it didn't fit", my guitar. Go figure. It does fit, and I AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT! I've only had it for 2 days, so what's that tell you? Thanks again, Damon. I'm looking forward to doing some business with you.

Hi, Everyone,
I'm still trying to get photos of the original 1993 NOS 8158-0 case posted, but it's a slow process without any kind of digital camera/ cellphone, etc. I got in touch with the photographer who did the last ones of the 1990 Elite I had sold, but have had no reply from him just yet. Lo, and behold, I actually received a call this morning from someone in TORONTO about the 19993 case, without photos, even! He' s going to look at it the next time he comes to Ottawa, so we shall see what we shall, won't we? More to follow.

Hi, Everyone.
The 1993 8158-0 NOS case has been SOLD, for 40.00 CAN., on Kijiji-Ottawa.ca., without photos, BTW. It went to a Celebrity owner, from Toronto!
