The "parking lot scene" really ended up bringing them down. First, they were discouraged(forced) to spread their show dates around the country to stop touring fans and the drug scene outside the shows just got violent. Many people would show up just to party and score drugs. Maybe rob people too... Even one notable case of murder in NY/NJ. I got some good memories and t-shirts to boot. Regards, BillÆ

Personally, I have never paid for drugs at a Dead show. I have also never seen anyone sell drugs "successfully" at a Dead show. (Kinda hard to sell drugs when others are giving them away) I also had some friends who successfully sold hundreds of Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches at multiple Dead shows. That was how they sponsored their tour. So, choose your product wisely. (I used to sell cold beer at a dollar a can)

Saw lotsa shows in the park, Stanford, Warfield, Winterland, Keezar... BTW just bought the Garcia Band Live 2 CD: really good singing and playing. No loathing here!

Here is a link to a video of Weir, Garcia and Vince Welnick doing the National Anthem at a Giants game in Candlestick back in the early 90's. In addition to playing their instruments, these guys could sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH8ObibNCoo

But this spirit lives on at any Dave Matthews Band or Phish show.

Here's a show from Spotify of the aforementioned Mr. Kaukonen during what I remember to be his Ovation years -1979- I'm going out on limb and assuming that this is played on an Ovation - it's a GREAT one IMHO - https://play.spotify.com/album/761TTY4bLzdsiJknarwUzr Edited by Peanut Butter 2014-10-15 1:14 PM
