The first outing consisted of catching one (rather large  ) wave and getting pummelled by the next 10. I lasted 20 minutes and sat on the beach for an hour waiting for my friends to return. For the next 2 days, I was scared to move quickly in case something snapped. Moving ahead 3 months... this morning I was out in the water for 2 and a half hours and I feel great. I would've stayed longer if the waves didn't disappear. It'll come, GWB. You've just gotta stick at it.

I drank a lot of beer after soccer games, but it wasn't quite the same as drinking beer after or during golf. A couple weeks ago I bumped into one of my old soccer cronies on an elevator and found out they were still playing, so I went to one of their practices. Ouch. I haven't been back for a couple weeks, but really need to drag myself back. Our golf league starts in a couple weeks and although it only hurts me mentally, I really need to find some more physical activity. I turned 56 last Saturday.

Were I more disciplined, I'd start doing squats weeks ahead of time. The extra weight I put on over the winter months doesn't help at all and there are always a few more pounds than the year before. Getting old sucks.

After being sedentary most of my life (with some hiking and walking), I had to start a more rigorous routine to try and stay off of diabetes drugs. Tried walking and an Eliptical. for the first year. My endurance improved, but my feet felt like I was walking on glass and my lower back was killing me. Last year I started jogging. Made it about a block at a time to begin with and now can finish a 5K, but I had to cut back on doing it every day as my feet now feel like I am wearing razor blades, and my lower back has a bowie knife firmly embedded at the belt line. I run every few days and use the eliptical in between and can now tolerate the pain, but it remains....old bones and back injuries. However, after 4 years, I am still not on diabetes drugs and feel more fit than I did in my 30's, so the pain is the trade off for good health...I think?

Smiling increases the pain threshold...when it starts to look like a rictus grin, try medication. Prescription or distilled as you prefer. (alternate treatment possible but not publicly acknowledged.)

Jogging is hard on people who DON'T have problems. Swimming is wonderful excercize, and puts no strain on your feet, shins, or anything else.

Wrong! I don't want to get used to it! So I found a few things that helped: swimming was one but we have no pool near here...so I have a jacuzzi tub that calls my name on a regular basis...now, I'm usually able to manage it... Finally admitting that I'm not 20 years old any more helped too...Drat it!

There are several poses or moves that should not be done if you have bad discs, but I must say that last night was the first night I haven't been woken up from back pain. Originally posted by MusicMishka: They told me the same thing. I told them I can't take opiates. After their confusion cleared, they decided to try nerve block injections. Wrong! I don't want to get used to it! There's only one thing more attention getting than a needle poking directly onto the nerve. That's getting sliced open and then touching nerves to find the right one to cut.

There's a point in life at about middle age after which jogging is just wrecking your joints. However, I find swimming lengths to be really irksome so I don't do it even though we have pool..lol
