Location: Utah | Oh no! Norm is a treat to watch. Last weekend we spent a couple of hours putting up three pieces of trim, trying to figure out exactly how to make the cuts for the correct angle. Norm woulda just put it across his table saw with some homemade jig in 30 seconds and been done with it. |

| I always enjoyed the stove knitters writing to Fine Woodworking to complain about Norm. Yeah, he took shortcuts, did joinery in less than traditional ways, and never hesitated to use an expensive, specialized power tool when he had a hand tool that could do the same thing hanging on the wall. But in the end, he still made home woodworking accessible to the masses and almost singlehandedly grew that industry. |

There was a time when you could watch PBS TV and learn how to fix things yourself.
They want to stop this.
Car Talk on NPR used to tell you how to fix your car.
Now they recommend what you should tell the mechanic at the dealership.
Motorweek... Half the show used to be about maintenance and repair and such.
Now it is all reviews sponsored by the car companies.
There actually used to be Guitar Lessons on the WGBH in Boston, during weekday afternoons.
(Unfortunately, I did not own a guitar then... Plus it was Classical guitar)
Little by little, they wanna turn us all into stock brokers and Walmart employees.
Nothing in between.
They will replace New Yankee Workshop with some other crap about expanding you mind through meditation.

Location: Marlton, NJ | Michael - there is not one ounce of mockery in there! Your work is like a fine red mahogany finished table made from old planks that were run through the planer and joiner, with fine routed edges, held together with sturdy bisquits, then sanded with an old orbital sander, and finish sanded with some fine grit sandpaper (to avoid having to use that first aid kit!).

I met Norm on Nantucket once and had a 15 minute conversation with him
about one of the previous TOH projects (Westwood MA farmhouse) that my boss
had bought a few years earlier.
I just happened upon him on the sidewalk in front of the current TOH project,
and said hello. During our conversation, he never once made it seem
like I was inconveniencing him or that he needed to leave. He was extremely
friendly and gracious.
I hope he gets more face time on TOH now. |
