Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Well, had to keep it "within the fold". This is a unique instrument, that probably can only be appreciated within this community.
So-o-o-o-o-o-o-o........I dropped the hammer, and have sent the funds. Left a note for War Eagle, suggesting we may want to wait 'til after XMAS for shipping. The temp-gorillas at the common carriers may be a bit careless, and a lot frenetic, at this juncture!
Shoot, there's only 7 days, anyway. I think I'd rather wait.

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Updated bump. The Limited is pulling out of North Carolina today, due to make it cross-country, a week-from tomorrow.
Keith was kind enough to hold the critter 'til the shipping pressures & activities subsided somewhat.
Should be a hoot! I may have to invest in a decent amp now. That 10-watt Kustom is probably not gonna cut-the-mustard.
The operant term was "explore your electric side". May find out it's a black hole, more like. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Latest installment. The Limited pulled into the yard yesterday. Haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but it does sound & play pretty suh-weet.
Y'know, that ergonomic notion to the design? It really is true. It is well-balanced, and I don't feel like the neck is trying to escape my ineptitude significantly.
I will be fumbling around quite awhile, but this is a great instrument.
I need to consult with The Brethren on a couple of technical issues, so "fair warning".....
Already sent off a parts request to The MotherShip. The case needs another latch at the pointy-end. I think I can fix the butt-end hinge, though. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | How are you at wiring circuit boards? The Breadwinner Fan website, to which YOU are, apparently, a member, has the schematic! Looks like a 2-transistor FET setup, with a couple of extra switches.
I'm trying to determine how to manipulate the current setup, so obviously, this is a process, not a destination.
I'll probably work on a bit of elementary rock tonite........with the headphones. SWMBO & The Girls (canine types) have exiled me to my inner sanctum, with stringent controls on decibel emanation. OK, then. |

Location: NW Washington State | But you don't have the original preamp, do you? I wouldn't try to duplicate it, too many weird switches and oddball parts. Looks like yours has Woody Wiring instead. Instead, you should build a custom preamp from subminiature hearing aid tubes. I got the strangest guitar with a preamp like that from some guy on eBay. |

Location: Pacific Northwest Inland Empire | Actually, Numbie, that critter is based on Aussie military hardware, and I've got another set of parts!
The active electronics on the BW operate off two 9-volt batteries, I suppose to power each transistor in the BW preamp circuit.
The circuit in the Fishbox has a 1.5v AA, & a 9-volt, but only one signal input.
Now, what am I supposed to use for the signal? Direct from the existing pups, into the existing blender, then routed into the preamp circuit?
Probably need a bypass provision, too. I think there's a switch in the original design to accomplish that.
BTW, did the original BW nylon bridge saddles have individual sensors? I would think the nylon would attenuate a lot of the acclaimed sustain on these guitars.
Anyrate, a lot of conjecture here. Probably ought to learn to play something on the critter, before performing major surgery! |

Location: NW Washington State | I think the original preamps used 18 volts for more headroom, not for each FET. You can find nice schematics in Brudev's section of the old photo gallery.
Tillman\'s FET preamp might be a good starting point. Another guy did a version with a more common FET and 18 volt supply.
The preamp would come after the blend pot or pickup selector switch, whichever you use. I'd maybe try
pickups>blend>tone>preamp>volume>output
to start. If the volume control follows the preamp, you might find that it works better with a lower value like 50K or 100K. You could use a push-pull pot at the tone or volume position to bypass the preamp if desired. Many people use a stereo output jack and run one lead of the battery supply through it so that when a mono plug is inserted it shorts out the battery connection and powers the preamp.
I keep thinking of odd ways to rewire guitars, but it's been a long time since I could see the top of my workbench. Gotta clean up my act.

Thanks for the info, too! Kinda follows what I expected, though the headroom thing is interesting. So, in crude terms, that means you can crank up the signal strength to the transistor & increase the frequency range? |

The Digitech RP50 has a Bzillion sounds and with an earphone jack/output! At $50 it may save a little domestic tranquility.
DVD and I worked that one over, I especially like the Viper pups. |
