I know there is another post about this BUT...

What are your thoughts on the CS257 for 299.99. I remember asking this once before, and got a mixed response, but I can't find the post. Anyway, it seems like a pretty good deal. LitzMusic lists some Black Vipers (possibly seconds) for 299.99 as well. How do these compare? My local music store has a Viper, but not a CS257 (actually they only carry one viper, and one balladeer),so I can't compare the two (nearest competition 60 miles away).

Forgive me for bringing up the topic again, but I am considering purchasing an electric/acoustic Ovation sometime in the near future, and I appreciate the wealth of knowledge on this board, well, pertaining to Ovation products anyhow!(j/k).

for a teacher you are sure spending a lot of time on the computer no wonder the youth of today are doomed.

look at the top of this page uder post a reply you will see the "search" function. That will help you find any previously posted information very easily.

I assume you are not the "technology" formerly knows as "computer" teacher or on second thought knowing the current state of the education system you probably are the technology teacher.

No Java this morning Al? Geez, for moderating a board designed for Ovation fans, you sure don't appear to have time to be bothered with questions that are Ovation specific!

Have you ever beed excited/intrigued about a topic, and just wanted to absorb as much info. as possible? If so, did you spend endless hours re-inventing the wheel, or did you tap into a knowledge base that already existed?

EXCUSE ME for my interest.

Norse(outta here, thanks to those of you who have helped me immensely over the past few days)man1

I apologize for asking for too many links
I apologize for asking the same question twice
I apologize for using my computer too much at work

Never the less, I LOVE MY 1117 LEGEND! And, I look forward to learning more about (and owning more) Ovation products.

Peace.

Norse, we all have been excited at one time or another, especially when it comes to KMC products. But..... if you're as excited as you say you are to learn about our turtle backed beasties.... go the the bulletin board, then go to general.... then read every single thread that has been posted here... you will be amazed at how many of your questions will be answered. Serious. When you find something that is of particular interest to you... write it down in a journal of your own.... then you have it for future reference. (i.e. guitar comparisons)
When you ask about guitars around here, you get opinions. You know about opinions. You said it was 60 miles to the nearest competition.... DRIVE the 60 MILES!!!!! If Ovations mean that much to you, you should be willing to drive 600 miles for "that one guitar." Or to find the one that may be "that one guitar."
If you want to learn about Ovations..... shut up and read! after you have read... ask. After you have asked.... listen. After you have listened... remember.
Keep in mind.... If was important enough for you to ask.... why wasn't it important enough for you to remember the response?

I have not drank coffee for close to 25 years.

There is nothing wrong with enthusiam. There is nothing wrong with wanting to gain knowledge and facts. But there is also a way to help yourself. I believe the phrase goes "give a man a fish he eats for a day, teach him to fish he eats for a lifetime". All I did was try to provide you with the skills so that you can come up with the ansewers to your questions on your own and perhaps in a more expediant manner.

I spent more years in a classroom than I will admit and never do you just come out and give someone an answer. You try to teach them to be independent and self sufficient. If that offends you I apologize.

I never said I have all the answers. I do not have an extensive catalog collection like many of the members here. But I will tell you that the majority of the knowledge on the board lies in the USA guitars. I am not knocking the celebrity series just stating a fact.

When you post a question that you yourself in the post admit that it was asked before just indicates that you did not even want to give any effort to finding the previously posted information.

Believe it or not I am not evil.

Al;

I believe the correct phrase is "give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day....teach a man to fish and he'll sit in a boat all day drinking beer".

Norse;

Nobody's trying to chastise you or quell your enthusiasm. I have LONG been enthusiastic about these guitars (cardmember since 1976) and for the most part have been so on my own since there have been a lot of friends, accqaintances and musical partners who've played Ovations and share my feeling for them. Admittedly, my enthusiasm waned over recent years, as I've seen them played on stage less and less, the few and far between print ads were schlock, and in recent years the web page has become little more than an offshoot of the Melissa Etheridge fan club. I was beginning to feel like the sole member of an Edsel fan club.

Providence brought me to this page and I was estatic when I found it!! I had SO many questions about my Adamas alone, but I admittedly felt being somewhat apprehensive about being a "newbie"
(I've never been involved in "boards" before). The very first thing that did was READ each and every post from the very beginning to (then) present day. I scribbled down notes with names, numbers, model numbers, serial numbers, product names, etc. I also kinda got a "feel" for what a lot of the guys (and ladies) are like by reading through their questions, answers, jokes and repartee. I also set up a folder in which to copy any and all pics for future reference.

One of the first questions I wanted to ask was "what's my guitar worth". I am SO glad I had the foresight to read through the responses given to the baker's dozen predecessors asking the same question before I posed it AGAIN!

Keep in mind, (and it's been said here before) that opinions are like assholes - everybody's got one. Whether or not one guitar at one price is going to be better than another guitar at another price so many miles away is really an opinion that YOU have to make.

Find a nice restaurant near that store 60 miles away, take the wife out to lunch on a Saturday afternoon and stop by the store to check it out. It's YOUR eyes/ears/fingers/heart/wallet that'll have to live with your decision, shouldn't THEY be the ones to disseminate the information?

There's a LOT of information being offered here, if dosen't contain all the answers outright, it should point you in the right direction to be able find it.

ps:

I've met Al, - he IS evil!!

(just kidding!!)

The real question is

"Is Al the kind of guy you want to take fishing with you?"

After all, he may drink all the beer in the boat.

Excellent advise Cliff ! As a luthier I have found (IMHO) that the price of a guitar or the model of a guitar, hell ANY instrument for that matter, is secondary to its "feel" to the player.
Instruments are like people, each and every one an individual, and as such no two guitars will "play" the same even if they are the same model built on the same day in the same place. And in a "perfect world" where all instruments were identical - no two players will get the same results from the same guitar/instrument. Norse, I think the folks here are trying to convey this in a "nice" way, information helps, but hands on is what it's really all about.

I couldn't help but read the rest of this thread. You all offer sound advice, and I hear you loud and clear.

The reason I bought my old warped and bowed 21 year old Legend from a pawnshop, as opposed to getting a "better deal" over e-bay, or buying a new Ovation/Celebrity for very close to the same price (I payed about $255.00 with tax), was because of exactly what you all suggested. I played the guitar, I know the guitar. I couldn't bring myself to buying a "pig in a poke" so to speak.

Am I willing to travel 60 miles to check out a guitar? D*mn straight I am, and I will, but being a Friday morning at work, and unable to leave and go check it out, I just thought I would get some feedback from others who have experienced owning or playing them. In this way, I can be a more informed shopper, know what to look for, and ask the right questions once I get to the music shop. I'm not asking anyone to make a decision for me (ask those who advised me NOT to buy the Legend [and I thank/value them for their opinions/insights]).

I didn't realize what a drag my 1001 questions have become. I coach football, I know football, I could talk football ALL DAY LONG, same questions over and over don't matter. I abstract and give knowledge everytime I converse on the topic. Never tire of it.

Al, I don't think of you as evil. I appreciate this board, and your willingness to volunteer and moderate it. Moreover, I have appreciated the many informed posters on this board. I am a newbie to Ovation, and perhaps I leaned a little too much trying to gleen from others, but believe me, I have and do research the topic on my own as well.

Al, I do however take exception to the personalization of your dislike for my posts. Questioning my integrity, professionalism/dedication to my work, and comments/opinions of my (or lack of) techincal skills, or my being too lazy to look things up for myself, show little class. You know me about as well as I know you, and I suspect I know very little about you, and therefore will not formulate an opinion/perception about you or your personal/professional life or abilities.

Again, advice taken, lessons learned, experience gained.

Peace,

Norse(thanks again)man1

You wouldn't want to take Al fishing cause he'd use all the line for guitar strings and the lures for picks.

I am in a bad f**king mood! I drove an hour up to L.A. this morning to see two clients only to find that I couldn't get near them because L.A. was having f**king Laker day complete with parade!

So I'm not going to put up with this bickering from any of you. Go sit on your beds until I tell you you can leave. Do throw things, talk, read, just sit on your beds. The only thing you can do is play your Ovations. When you have all calmed down and I have as well, then you can come out of your rooms and we'll all go fishing. Al's buying the beer. And the rest of us are drinking it. Now that's fishing!

I'm pretty new here, but I'll add my 2 cents worth (or .016 euros, or whatever). Although new to this board, I have and do participate on some other boards having to do with my other interest which is mountain biking. The wonderful thing about these boards is that we all participate by choice. Nobody forces anyone to post, to read, or to replay. It's all voluntary and all very opinionated. That's the beauty of it - so take it for what it is worth.

Norse, about the Celebrity - if you play it and it feels good, sounds good, and makes you happy, THEN it is a good deal. $299 might be a good deal, or it may be a rip-off. Let our eyes, ears hands and heart decide.

Ok, you guys can all come out of your rooms and play together.

Al, don't forget to buy the beer. And while we're talking about fishing, there's an old Country Artist on ebay that was bashed and sounds like it was repaired well. For $145 buy it now, it sounds like a guitar you could take on a fishing boat and not worry.

Surf.. that reminds me... Hey Marketing Folks!!! Why not try the all Aluminum and Fiber bowl idea (a la Matrix/Medallion) again, in some far out colors and make matching skateboards out of the bowl material also!!!

why not just put fold-away wheels on the bowl? Then a person could really go to town on an Ovation.....

Norseman1, I'm always glad to make time to discuss or give an opinion on different guitars. I just purchase that CS257 (natural finish) from Mars for $299. I've had it for a week now and it sounds great plugged-in, which is exactly what I bought it for. Of course with the shallow bowl, played acoustically, it does sound pretty thin compared to my Martin HD-28....but again that's not what I bought it for and there is about a $1400 cost difference too. For what I need and $299, I'm thilled, but you'll need to play one and decide for yourself.
