I got the Kaki King CD today, which got me to thinking about new and/or under-appreciated talents out there.
My vote for an under-appreciated talent goes to:
Joyce Cooling [Cameo, Playing It Cool, Keeping Cool & Third Wish] (Brazilian Jazz).
Anybody else have one?

Glen Campbell... Although his name is fequently mentioned on this site because of his connection to Ovation, he rarely gets the recognition or respsect he deserves as a player. IMHO, he's right up there with the cream of the crop of players -- both past and present! Without a doubt, I owe my passion for the guitar (and especially Ovations) to Mr. Campbell.

I agree with Jeff. For all the studio work Glen did in the 60's (member of the Wrecking Crew), he should be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. For all he did to promote country music on his tv shows, he should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame. In his heyday, he played more styles of music and played them well, without being able to read music than anybody else.

There are a lot of good pickers out there, but none that could play everything that he could (and when he puts his mind to it, still can!)

AMEN!!! Brothers Jeff & Paul,
I couldn't have said it better myself.Ovation recognized & honored Glen for all he's done for putting Ovation guitars on "the map" with his own signiture series guitars ('71-'85) I think it's about time we saw a "Special Edition","Collectors/Reissue","Glen Campbell Anniversary" model from Ovation!!!(IMHO)

Hey Paul T. You've got a great eclectic list of old & new artist who are under-appreciated mostly because they are not mainstream. I listen to them and more on a local (Spindale,N.C.) NPR station that plays Louie Armstrong to Bill Monroe,Miles Davis to The Fleshtones,Michael Reno Harrell to Phish, etc. I would like to invite you and all the members to give a listen via the World Wide Web at:
http://www.wncw.org

I hope it will become your "favorite" listening place as it has for me!! Click on their "Listen Live" link and enjoy!!!

I agree on the Glen Campbell idea, but I think in his heyday he got the recognition he deserved, he's just not getting the historical recognition. He isn't through playing yet, as we've seen. I think Mickey Newberry is under rated as a singer even though a lot of people did his songs.

Anywho... There are 100's if not 1000's of great pickers out there. The reason some are famous and others are not, unfortunatly, is some have publicists and some don't (or some variation). Very few (although some) artists became well known just because they were good. That does not mean that folks like Glen Campbell or my other favorite Roy Clark aren't great. I'm just saying, they were in the right place and time to have someone recognize their greatness, and decide to make a buck and share it with us (the greatness not the bucks). Speaking of bucks, Buck Dharma and Allen Lanier are on my list of great under-rated guitarists.

As far as the "Hall's of Shame" I provide the following link. If you are easily offended by foul language, I suggest you not click, or if you do, just scroll to the bottom. THe page is not organized that well in my opinion, but the bottom in the BIG LONG LIST of bands that REALLY should be in the R'n-R Hall of Fame, but will never be.

Here is the link, or you can just look at a partial list I borrowed below: All of these names have been eligible and will not be inducted. I don't agree with all of the guys comments, but the list is the list.

Holy Cow

Miles, 30 years of music just flashed before my eyes as if I was drowning.

But missing was the previous 20 years:

Hank Williams
Bob Dylan
Hank Snow
Ernest Tubb
Hank Thompson
Jerry Lee Lewis
Elvis
Ray Charles
Marty Robbins
Johnny Cash
Carl Smith
Roy Orbison
Bill Monroe
Frankie Yankovich
Trio Los Panchos
Trio Los Diamentes
Linda Ronstadt
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
Country Gentleman (truly overlooked)
Flying Burrito Bros
Two Lane Highway

These came to me as I swam to the surface, then as if far of in the distance, a sotto voce said:

Frank Sinatra
Dean Martin

And I sank again as there is no end to nostalgic frummery, especially when a I passed a sunken body and it started murmuring:

Guy Lombardo

Bailey

Under appreciated? Joan Armatrading! Plays an Ovation. There was a video of her, guessing 70's or early 80's release, jamming with her Ovation. Changed my mind about a plastic guitar.

Doc Watson blew me away in concert. I don't think the breadth of his talent has ever been captured on record. I've never been a big Fleetwood Mac fan but watching Lindsey Buckingham on The Dance DVD, I think he is underrated too.

I'll second you on Doc Watson, I saw him live just before we left CA and I have a recent CD with him with Mac Wiseman and Del McCoury called Doc, Mac, and Del with some great picking and singing.

I think Joe Ely is also under appreciated as a song writer and singer.

That issue (June) also contains an ad for Kaki's CD.
(Sadly, the (partial) picture of her Adamas is the ONLY Ovation in the magazine!).
