I especially like the part about having the fret ends dressed to protect his hands from getting sliced up. Definitely a desirable custom feature.

They come in all shapes and sizes and do look interesting. I think they're all made in China cause they're cheep but the workmanship seems good in the pictures. Definately a poser guitar, it will look better than it sounds. Look under "dobro guitar" and you'll find them.

The Chinese seem to have figured out how to solder, eletro-plate, sand-blast and engrave a little better of late but thier cones still sound like Humvee hub-caps. The factories supply various distibutors worldwide with the same steel or wood-bodied reso guitars, under countless brand names including Stagg, Johnson, Carlo Robelli, AXL, Vintage and dozens of others which are equally forgettable. The legendary Supro & Regal names have been acquired by a distributor & appear on generic Chinese-made resonator guitars. Note that while the guitar mentioned looks like a resonator, it does not have a cone, which begs the question "why?" With the resonator versions if you invest 60 bucks or so in an OMI, National or Quarterman cone you can have yourself a very good sounding cheap resonator guitar, but it'll never be a National or a Dobro

I mentioned earlier of meeting John Dopyro in Escondido, CA and that he was a dedicated musician and a master instrumental innovator. He built Dobro violins and lap steels, that were stunning in sound and concept. Unfortunately, he, and his siblings, were in their 80's then (in the 70's) and have all gone on. Sometimes I think I hear their handiwork in a NM thunderstorm or a sweet mountain wind coming down from the Organs, or a train with the hammer down that went by today with the engineer riding that whistle, dreaming of steam, with rattle and rush and that unique sound that only an old Dobro in a great player's hands can make (Uncle Josh comes to mind). Bailey (the stupe that didn't buy a Dobro lap steel from John for $200)

While the good ones were made from 1927-1941 the ones made by McGregor Gains and Don Young today (since 1989) come as close as you can get to the original Nationals. Actually most play better than the old ones. They have been great in keeping my fleet of originals in good working order and the new ones I have are wonderful. The latest of which is a Baritone tricone. A total tonal monster. Don't tell MWoody, he'll get beside hisself again.

Roasted Pig, Sputtering 30 weight and Friends gathering sounds like an excellant way to spend the weekend! Do they still make you play for your supper(CWK, Bailey)? My lovely Wife has been showing more excitement for the OFC 05! To share my three chords with you would be a wonderful thing. She's offered to lead a Women's discussion Group on How to deal with our O-ffliction!

I think that maybe arranging an "Alternate Itinerary" for the OFCwidows might not be a bad idea. . . . (a shopping trip, day at the beach, whatever). Might make getting "clearance" to go a little easier if the "significant other" has an option OTHER than spending the entire day at a guitar factory (especially those who've "been there/seen that"). Jeanette was TOTALLY pissed about not being able to go this year . . not so much for the Tour (she's seen it), but for the Pre and PostTour Festivities. I'm sure she'd be up for a "LadiesAlternative" and might be interested in helping to organize one . . Perhaps we should discuss this again when we get closer to '05? . . .
