| I was just wondering how do I keep my Ovation from falling off my lap? JUST KIDDING! Sorry, couldn't resist. I just ordered my 2078 TX-5 Elite last night after some research and am now learning everything I can about it until I can play it when it comes when I found this forum and had to join. It goes against every part of my being to buy a guitar without playing it first but every review was outstanding and these things are so damn hard to find they really have to be that good (I hope!). My name is Bob, I've been playing for 17 years, which I just realized is exactly half my life now. I play electric and acoustic and have just started gigging regularly and needed a guitar that sounded better plugged in than my current setup, which is a beautiful sounding Taylor with a fishman pickup that does not quite do it justice. This is my first acoustic/electric and hopefully my last. I loved the manifesto and hope I can make myself a worthy member of this community. I do have one question. I also airbrush and am already thinking of a design for the face of this guitar as it just BEGS to be painted. Any suggestions on whether this is a decent idea or not? Will I lose any sound quality by applying paint and a clearcoat? Thanks in advance for any answers or tips! |

Will I lose any sound quality by applying paint and a clearcoat?
Yes.
The concept of the Textured top was that it is a very Light paint.
Others have postulated that the texture also increases the surface area of the top.
I have played USA Elite T next to a USA Flame-top Elite T and you can definitely hear the difference.
The Flame T has paint and then the polyester clear coat.
The Elite T only has the bowl paint on the Top as well as the bowl.
I have painted a 2078T once-upon-a-time. (red)
After the enamel paint started to flake-off, I painted it again. (black)
When I painted it the second time I used multiple very light coats of paint.
It sounds alright, but it has an odor that comes-and-goes.
I said all this to say that I would NOT RECOMMEND painting your Ovation.
Oh... and if you still decide to paint the guitar I would not use a clearcoat.
That would make three layers of paint which cannot be helpful to the sound.
As others have recommended to me, Maybe you should get a beater TX to test this theory on first.
