Why has the mass advertisement of guitars always been limited to magazine ads?
What might have been different if while watching the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour you saw a short ad for Ovation?
Just 30 seconds that would hit on an endorser or two, a short animation showing the construction and science behind them, then wrap it up with the lifetime limited warranty.
If the Goodtime Hour was too expensive, how bout the Johnny Cash summer replacement show? Or other music-centric shows? Smothers Brothers American Bandstand Midnight Special or even Hee Haw.
Even today. Look how numerous, fractured and specialized the cable channels are. Maybe it's too late for Ovation but why aren't the other big boys promoting themselves? Fender, Martin, Guild, Gibson, and Taylor.
Palladia is a great channel / venue. They re-run current and classic concerts all the time. Whenever they run a John Denver concert, Guild should be all over that like a hobo on a hot dog. I'm not saying to push acoustic guitars during a Heavy Metal Marathon but pick a choose. The target audience during the Carol King / James Taylor concert is sitting right there! . The Guitar Gods and Singer/Songwriters that drove sales in the '70's are all but gone. I believe there is a large number of young ones (under 30), who are just waiting to be inspired, encouraged, and nudged in the right direction. Why not put a little Madison Avenue / Mad Men style spin to work and see how far it goes? If the industry wants to move more than just the cheap import starter instruments people need to be informed of the possibilities and benefits. Now.. someone please help me down from this soapbox. It's gotten way to high.
