Hello again - is this pickup/preamp active or passive? If active, where is the battery stored/replaced? There is a black box w/wiring connected to volume knob and another black box to the right of volume knob box. Thanks for any help you can offer.

All USA factory pickup systems have active preamps. The 1615 Pacemaker had the basic single knob FET preamp. I could be wrong but I don't think the Pacemaker was ever issued with the concentric vol/tone knobs. There should be a screw just above the waist on the bass side. A quarter-turn of this screw releases the battery holder. You may need to loosen the strings and hold the battery box while you turn the screw
