I generally play dub and doom style music which the neck pickup is amazing for. Unfortunately the previous owner of the this particular magnum HACKSAWED the pickup surrounds so that it removed the join between the bridge and neck pickup either side of the strings. Whilst the part surrounding the pickups is fine, there is nothing joining them! IS there any place or anyone who has created reproductions of the full metal surround? I would gladly buy one! Obviously buying one second hand would be near impossible. Another few things, the switch appears to never want to stay in anything but the middle position, it springs back to it after a few seconds, I assume its a special type of switch, almost as if its on a spring. Is there a recommended replacement? Also, the truss rod is pretty much maxed out and wont tighten anymore, is this going to be just a simple washer job? It seems to have a basic truss rod that will allow for it. Kind regards to everyone who replies Rob.

When you respond I'll upgrade your access and move this into the general area where more people can respond. That's shame! Is there any benchmark as to how much surrounds go for? Also my serial number is 985 is that a fairly low one? Any ideas of age? Thanks for your reply, much appreciated!

Your bass has some interesting characteristics... It's a Magnum I based on the body design and electronics, but I've never seen an early one with a black surround and bridge. The black bridge was used for a little while near the end of the Magnum run on the III and IV's. The bases were from 1974 to 1983 and you can see from the Serial info in the FAQ section... "B+5 Digits = 1974-1979 Magnum solid body basses " so the 985 doesn't add up exactly.. The model was made from 1974 - 1980, so that narrows it down pretty close. Their may be a date under the bridge. Next time you change strings check it out.

Took a photo under the bridge and I am unsure what it actually says. However the pots look original they say 481007-A-98 and 1377811 I have seen lots of Magnum 1's and 2's with black surrounds and bridge, its just a lot of them have worn down the base finish underneath. Mine however does have chrome tuners, which I guess was standard.

Someone else might be able to chime in on the pot dates, but for now... regardless of the serial number list... that looks pretty clearly to me like 7/71. Interesting.

The neck and body on yours appear to still be in good shape. You may be able to eventually find one with a thrashed body at a cheap price. I've seen some like that go pretty cheap on Ebay.

The surround I have is colored "Gold". :-( It was part of a set of trim pieces for what I assume was intended to be a Magnum "Deluxe", much like the Preacher Deluxe had gold appointments. I'll try to get some pics later on. TJR Edited by TJR 2012-05-15 8:51 PM
