well, heres my situation, im looking to buy another ovation. Im not that good yet, id say an intermediate player maybe. Again i have a celebrity roundback/ shallow or mid bowl (im not sure) but i get that the bigger bowled guitars have a richer sound. Maybe in the range of 500 - to 750.00 or so, in about a week or two. so i have time to look around and do some research. I would appriciate any suggestions/ help on maybe what to look for, best bargain for value, sound, quality. anything helps, the more i look around the more i see, G8r, and jim, and others, maybe you fellas could help, or have something your getting rid of that, may suit what im looking for. (which i'm not even sure of. thanks all.

ROUNDBACK had an excellent deep bowl, AAA spruce, A braced Anniversary for an very fair price...at last post, he decided to keep it but may be interested. In addition, he is a good seller which takes the risk out of it. I believe he wanted about $500. Quick search would show you the pictures and description.

I was going to buy it but thought I was able to get a Hamer Monaco here in San Diego (not the Elite)...that fell through so got Stephen's HD-28VS.

No, they're all made of Lyrachord, although I have seen pictures of some one-offs made of wood. You might want to go here to get some info on Ovation features, including the back:

Hey 57'strat - thanks for the vote of confidence, but I'm hardly the most knowledgeable member here. I have owned a few different Ovations and had the good fortune to play an incredible variety of Ovations and Adamas, so I'd be glad to give you my take on them.

For what you want to spend you can pick up a really fine wood-top Ovation, either traditional round hole or Elite style with the multiple sound holes. The deep bowls will almost always be louder and sound richer, with greater projection, than the shallow bowls.

I've owned a shallow legend and a mid bowl Celebrity. They were fine guitars, but they don't compare with the ones I have now. In my herd the one I think sounds best (including the wood boxes) is the Elite 1537 and is the one I pick up most often. But coming in a really, really close second are either my Custom Legend 1619 and my 1987 Collector.

These are just my personal opinions, and you'd really have to play them to see if they suit you, but any of the following would be a great guitar and likely within your price range:

Elite 1718
Legend 1617
Custom Legend 1619
Legend Ltd 1651
Legend Anniversary 1657

If you prefer a cutaway:

Legend 1767
Legend 1769
Elite 1768 or 1768-7LTD

Finally, do a search for these particular models in the For Sale section here. I know there are at least a couple of the ones I listed currently for sale. You're far better off buying within "the family" than from a stranger off eBay or craigslist. I've bought from members here, met many others, and wouldn't hesitate to do business with anybody here whether or not we'd met in person. If roundback still has that Anniversary Legend for sale I'd jump on it.

Good luck with your search, and keep us posted.

If you're looking for new, the Elite T is the bargain of the century. Prices now about $599. This guitar is worth twice that much. People raved about the bang-for-the-buck when the guitar sold for $900. Apparently it's a short term availability.

If I had a spare $600 I would order one today! Heck, I'd order two if I could.

I believe AL has some of the Elite T's in stock or he could certainly get one.

thnx all, i have been looking into them quite a bit in the past few days. So I guess every/all ovations were the lyrachord? are adamas and others made all the same too? as old as some are i didnt think they used the material (lyrachord) back in the days? To be honest this site has boosted my interest in the ovation name and guitars tenfold. And i can see how ppl get hooked on buying and trading. I guess ill be purchasing another in a week or two.

Story is its the material Kaman used for helicopter rotor blades. And yeah, the Adamas has the same back.

rule one; the quality of the guitar you buy has nothing to do with how well you can play it

rule two; figure out your money, go to a story and spend your budget on what looks and sounds the best to you.
or call up Al and take what he's got that suits you

Someone here once said "buy the most guitar that you can't afford." That seems like a pretty good rule.

A rule which applies to most things in life; cars, golf clubs, clothes, women (or men), tennis rackets, computers, etc, etc, etc.

I second the Elite T recommendation, if you can get used to the 'terminator' look. Still can't believe how nice mine sounds for a $600 guitar. I'd pick it over my buddy's Martin dreadnought (41? 45? How do they number those things anyway?) any day.

interested in a lightly loved Adamas Q-597?

check my moving sale post in the "for sale" section, looks like we got the new house and I could use an extra mortgage payment.

all of the above suggestions are excellent as well.

Thanks,

Glenn

For $500 to $750, you should be able to buy yourself something that will sound very nice. That's getting right into the heart of the Ovation USA models (except some of the rare collector and limited editions). Can't go wrong on just about anything. Trust the OFC membership.
