I have a Ovation Ultra Series 1527 with the original 'stack-knob' preamp and the main things I wish to do are:
#1 get an on board tuner
#2 get the battery in a nicer place

I plug it in every Sunday morning and try to make a joyful noise to the Lord. I'm sure there are times when the guy leading worship wishes I wasn't plugged in!

I'm also sure that some of you are saying the best thing I can do is get a "real" Ovation and stop messing with a plywood topped wok. If I had the $$$ to get a really good Ovation, it would still have to get past the hurdle of my poor playing!

So what is the best/most cost effective way to upgrade the electronics? I'd like to keep it all Ovation, but I am in Taiwan, far from a selection of original Ovation parts. I was able to find a "Fishman Aero Blend" unit which would cost about $60. I'm not adverse to cutting a hole for it, but the under-saddle pick up is a cord/cable, not flat. On other sites they suggest carving a grove for the round cable. The guy at the guitar store said he thinks he can swap the old pick up into the Fishman unit.

Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas?

Peter, I'm not the guy to help you here!

I did nearly choke however on "a plywood topped wok"

On the list of Ovation one liners that has to be near the top!! :D

Welcome Peter!

Adding a Later Preamp

It's not that hard if you brave and cautious!

To stay Ovation add the Oval shaped newer units.

Nice installation there, Mike!
Kinda curious, though- besides improved access to the interior, was there another reason to put in a trapdoor? The rest of the Pacemaker looks original & unaltered.

I prefer to have the back hatch because it makes everything so much easier.
Preamp install, troubleshoot, brace inspection, crack repair, etc.

It doesn't alter the sound and I had the parts.

And... the part about me being a clutz and having really big hands and thick wrists might have been a motivator.

Look at the Fishman Ellipse Blend or Aura Preamps. No cutting required for the preamp.

You need to be careful with the Fishman Ellipse system. Depends what kind of bracing pattern your guitar has. They fit beautifully in X braced guitars. I have the Ellipse Matrix Blend in my Martin OM42 and HD28VS. But I could not fit it into an Ovation with A bracing. I think any of the VT bracings will also be a problem. Might work with an Ovation X braced, but I have not tried it.

Woody, you need a bigger ironing board...

As i thought about it, an ironing board makes sense:
1. it won't harm the finish of the guitar
2. all the horizontal surfaces in my workroom/office are already covered with piles of stuff, popping out an ironing board would be easier than clearing space. if i had an ironing board... would this be the ironing board equivalent of GAS?

Wow, you can get some really pretty wood on an ironing board in Port Orchard!

and to show my ignorance, what are the extra little do-hickies on the 12 string? Are they to keep some of the strings a little lower?

Yes! Fifty points to Gryffandor!

Those are for changing the angle of the strings at the peghead.

AKA, do-hickies, thingies, string rollers and my favorite spare-parts.

The Northwest is full of Wood choices and weekend lumberjacks.

And BTW - Peter will be receiving an OP30 installation kit.

If any of you junior BFLG'ers are considering the add-an-oval-preamp-ectomy I hope this will help push you over the edge.

Yes You Can, Can!
