"Rare Vintage" Ovation

Give me a break...

In over 30 years of playing I have never seen a guitar like this! This is a really perplexing guitar, it has the Ovation headstock and some of the Ovation earmark design but yet it doesn't appear in any searches on Ovation electric guitars. That said, I'm convinced it is an Ovation
Hey, if he's that convinced, I've got a Rare Vintage Bali Stradivarius I'll sell...I've never seen another one and I can't find any info on the internet but I just know it's real...

Yeah, right!!!

Not sure I get the joke. That IS an interesting guitar. And before you think someone slapped an Ovation neck on something... look closer.

Frankly it's got all the earmarks of Japan, but to my knowledge, the only Pacific rim connections with Ovation have been Korea.

Unless I'm missing something very obvious, I wish I had an extra $300.

The metal nut and zero fret makes me think it's not an Ovation neck.

I'd say it certainly wasn't production, and likely not from CT, but maybe a prototype sample from someplace?

There's the zero fret, but also the channel for the truss rod would be seen past the top of that stubby TRC if it was an Ovation headstock I would think. The shape also doesn't look exactly right, but it's close. Also the only necks that the neck bolts made a nice square were the Storm necks.

If this was someone's "project" they spent a lot of time as they cut the bottom of the neck off as well..... again... that's IF it's even an Ovation neck to start out.

Frankly I think it's a pretty cool guitar. I'd love to have it, but I like eating too. :)

Miles, it looked like a Tesico or similar to me with the electronics...with the addition of a Ovation neck...To me, it's not the guitar that's the "joke"; just the way the seller claimed it to be what he thinks it is...

+1 what Mike said. Looked like a Teisco to me as well...

It was kinda like seeing a pony with a narwhal tusk gaffer taped to it's snout being advertised as 'rare unicorn breeding stock'.

Just found it a little humourous that a music store would even take a flyer on something like that...

http://www.mercatinomusicale.com/cerca/eko-ovation.html

Was doing a bit of research on a possible OVATION/EKO connection and came across this link to a site selling modern EKO guitars that are obviously patterned on Ovation designs.

I can't see an Italian (read western, civilized... subject to law) company so openly flouting copyright designs?

Anybody know for certain whether these are made under licence from OVATION?

Beal, perhaps?

I'd like to hope that Ovation wouldn't officially license something with string pegs... yuck!

Good find!

Personally, it looks like crap to me ... I wouldn't even take it for the cost of shipping. Have at it.

FYI ... here is the update from the listing ...

IMPORTANT NEWS: I just spoke to Kim Keller at Ovation Customer Service and got some important information. Mr. Keller confirmed that this is INDEED an Ovation. Apparently Ovation somewhere in the late 70's, early 80's looked into having some guitars made for them. This guitar was made in Italy, possibly by the EKO people. The logo was probably painted over. The inlays were cut out of real Ovation fingerboards in large pieces and put into the necks of these instruments. Mr. Keller owns one of these, which he got from in the factory at the time. He also confirmed this story with Mr. Kaman, the founder of Ovation. Only of few of these exist as samples, with this one and Mr. Keller's counting for two. Here's a missing link in the Ovation history books!

I don't actually want to buy one (insert squeal of horror here...), lol!!

I'm more interested in the history of OVATION than anything else. When the seller of the 'monster' listed above said he had confirmation from Kim that this thing might be 'real', I figured I'd have a look around.

I found a couple of EKO collectors sites as well. There wasn't anything identical to the one shown above, but a lot of the parts look pretty close to those used on vintage EKO's.

 Ya mean my EKO BA-1-E SBL acoustic bass might be a twice (trice?) removed cousin of the Kaman family? Or maybe my made in Italy, assembled in Fayetteville, AR, Baldwin Model 712?

Doesn't matter if Ovation ever made it. It's not worth any more than opening bid, if that.

Interesting. Most of that is true, but I sure didn't pick up the phone and contact Mr. Kaman about it. The store owner seemed like a nice enough guy,and I think we agreed that the guitar is pretty much a POS, but it's in his shop on consignment for a good customer.
If its anything like mine, it weighs more than a Les Paul and the tone is, well, 'quirky'.

Mea culpa... Miles

It is so true about 'judging a book by it's cover'.

The seller's story seemed sooooooooo unlikely, but in the end was totally valid and another important lesson learned...

As a guitar, it isn't really that noteworthy, but is an important piece of the Ovation story.
