I've seen and played Dave's guitar. It's beautiful and I hope that it goes to a good home within the OFC. The price is very very reasonable.

This isn't "longneck" as in longer scale but refers to the fret at which the neck joins the body. Earlier examlpes joined at the 16th fret, this joins at the 18th. Dave, check your email, I'm interested.

I'll post later what I saw in Japan and bought (hey, I couldn't come home without a souvenior, right?). About the Thunderhead. I have received a lot of emails offering to buy it (8 OFC members). Far exceeded my expectations. I'll answer the emails in the order they were received. It automatically went up on ebay a few days ago, because past experience posting sales on OFC generally doesn't result in a sale, but I wanted to offer you guys first crack. I'll cancel the ebay auction assuming one of the OFC guys takes it.

The later ones had closer pu spacing due to the longer neck. This guitar is a long neck Thead, but all the hardware has been swapped for brand new Tornado hardware. Model number is 1233, which is Thunderhead.

I will have to double-check the scale lengths, but I never noticed a difference. Not doubting you.. just sayin... it's what I look for when I check one out. This is the first I have seen to break the rule in at least 20 guitars. Again, doesn't mean anything... we've seen stranger. Bill can you shed any additional light on this?

Short neck Thead and Tornado: they have the same pickup spacing (4 inches center to center). Long neck Thead and Tornado have the same pu spacing (3-3/4 inch center to center). The long necks and short necks have the neck pu in the same location, that's why there is a gap between the pu and the end of the neck on the long version. On the long neck version the bridge is moved forward, so that's why the bridge pu also is moved forward, making the pu spacing smaller. There are a few other variables that might make the spacing look different than it really is. There were two different kinds of pu black mounting rings. The earliest ones had no ridge on the top and were slightly different size than the later ones with the ridge. Also, I have seen that the exact placement of the f-holes has some variation, but it does not seem to be related to model or year. I can't confirm this, but I was told that Thunderhead and Tornado bodies are exactly one in the same. Only difference is that the back of the Thead body was flamed and the Tornado was not. The difference between Thead and Tornado was just the neck and the hardware. Let me know if your guitars are different. Anything is possible.
