According to Ovation history, the Balladeer was named after a local group in Ct that first used Ovation guitars. I think there is a picture of them in the 1972 catalog.

Anybody know what happened to this group?

I don't think it was them. I like the idea they moved to town and changed their name to Lenwood Skanknard. I'll give this further research and report back.

Actually, you may be the only person on this board who might know what happened to them.

I heard that the drummer died in a bizarre gardening accident & the singer choked on vomit, though not his own vomit......... or that could've been Spinal Tap.

Folks, I'm here to report the truth.

Bailey is the only one who really knows what became of the original Balladeers.

Bailey, tell.

Miss your ramblings.

Forgive me, I was forced into this

I'm sure I knew the original Balladeers, as they appeared at a folk festival in San Diego many years ago. They derived their name from a weird accident that happened to them somewhere in the north east. They were polishing their chops playing any venue that would have them, playing folk music and trying to come up with a catchy name. All the good ones were taken, as you all know, The Seekers, The Bluegrass Boys, Bob Dylan, etc. ad finitem. They got a gig on a fake western town set that specialized in hay rides, and on one ill fated day they were the witnesses to, and victims of, a head on collision between two hayride wagons pulled by yellow and green John Deere tractors. The leader shouted as he observed the resultant wreckage, "It looked like a ball of Deeres" His banjo player said "THAT'S IT Balladeeres" The final e was dropped as irrelevant and a legend was born. At least thats the story they told me, you can believe it or not.

Some day I'll tell you about the Legend that was born that day. (The DNA results tell the story).

Some members of the board will attempt to hide that story.

That was later in their careers when they appeared in some asian countries. I would pursue the parentage of the Bluebirds if you're into real scandal. Also, remember that Cleopatra took a Viper to her breast. This whole industry is waiting to be exposed. Paul Simon said "Coo Cooka Chu, Mrs Robison" and he played an Ovation, what else are they hiding?

Dubyatoo has a lot to explain.

Well, I was wrong again. My phone rang, and on the line was a person with the hoarse and raspy voice of years spent playing smoky bars and tobacco free smoky art soirees. He mentioned his Eskimo name which I can't even begin to spell, and told me a chilling tale of great achievement and great degradation. He had joined this remnant of an Eskimo tribe in the 50's at the age of 17 to try to become a man. The tradition was that he would be given an Eskimo name when he had proven himself by performing a feat of undeniable fame but he must live with that name for the rest of his life. He mushed with the reindeer over trackless artic wastes and rowed in the Eskimo kayak, chasing the whales for 2 long Eskimo years. He felt he was near to the point of the naming ceremony, but, being young, he mentioned the desire for female company as they were in the wilds far from such pleasures. The old chief said "we have reindeer for that". This led to his naming ceremony, and his expulsion from the tribe on the same day. The chief had failed to mention that the Eskimos used the reindeer to pull a sled into the town of Inuvic where there were prostitutes. So he ended up with the Eskimo version of a name he was sworn to live with for the rest of his life. "Damlocochingochdoe" as best I can spell it phonetically. In english it was "Balled a Deer" I think the obvious is that he went on to found a band and lived up to his vow although he changed the name a little to take out the sting of humiliation. I promised him I would tell the unvarnished truth, just like those guitar necks that need wax.

Yes, that was the exact story I was trying to recall, but I couldn't remember the details. Mystery solved.

By the way, I don't recall Paul Simon singin coo coo ca choo Mrs. Robinson, but I think I once heard a bootleg copy of Jim Morrison and Iron Maiden doing Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard.

Watch out Scott, you might get an Eskimo name and have to form a band to save your soul.

Bailey, you need to write a few songs about all of this and record them. I see a VERY bright VH1 Storytellers in the making here. :D :p

I wonder what they would have been called if the wagons had been being pulled by Massey Fergusons?

Nils

I've seen a few Massey Fergusons around here, I suspect they would have been called New Mexicans and the guitar would be known as the Mariachiadeer and would also come in a Guitarron model. In the rest of the country Ferguson was the partner of Ford, my dad bought a Ford Ferguson in 1954. (Ferguson developed the hydraulic system that Ford and Massey used). There was a breakup over royalties and Ferguson went to Massey to get revenge. They all died from neglect and John Deere became stronger, The worth of various brands was an important subject amongst us Ohio Farm people in the 40's and 50's, we were Farmall, our neighbor was John Deere (chunka chunka BIG 2 cylinder), my cousin was Allis-Chalmers (wimpy little orange one rower), but the master was the monster Case that pulled the Thrasher from farm to farm and set it up, and drove it from it's power take off (PTO) while we all followed it from farm to farm and threshed grain and ate humoungous dinners prepared by the wives. My brother and I did our first commercial venture as my dad let us rent out ourselves and our new little Farmall to follow the thresher and haul in the sheaves. They worked our ass off, but we held our own, and as I said before, we ate GOOD.

Bailey :D
