Well yesterday my rep came over with the new idea guitar for a test drive.

My impressions.

WOW the guitar is very nice. I was surprised to find it has a solid top. Even though it is a made in China guitar the quality is very nice. It is very playable and comfortable. It is NOT what I expected at all . If all the guitars come through as nice as this they have a winner.

The idea guitar comes in a silver/gun metal color. It reminds me of the elite T. You can get the guitar in any color as long as it is in the silver/gun metal.

The preamp is really cool!!. First it sounds good. YES it sounds good as a preamp. Second the features are intuitive and easy to use. There are some preloaded lessons in the preamp. There are also some preloaded rhythms etc on it that you can play along to. The display tells you what key to play in!!!! WOW now that is great.

the recording and looping feature is also cool. You can record from the external mic which will include you playing the guitar and singing or talking or just from the internal pickup of the guitar. This is a GREAT feature and a God send for the singer songwriter who gets an idea, wants to record it before they loose it. I again cannot stress how cool this feature is!!!!!

The tuner is typical to the current model tuners available in the OP series preamps and the joy stick allows you to lower or raise the vol of what is being played back so you can blend it with what you are playing.

USB access allows you to mange files on your computer, load mp3 backing tracks or tunes (you can use it like an Ipod) and there are a ton of other possibilities.

My two caveats, the guitar does not come with the original ovation pickup so the sound is more trebly to my taste, the screen is small but there is no other choice it has to be.

battery life with recording about 30 hours using it just like a preamp is the same as any other preamp around 120 hours.

We also tried this in an Adamas with an op pro. the preamp dropped right in and worked. Sounded great and had all the functionality.

So WOW WOW WOW

reserving them now.

you know how to get in touch with me

What do the units cost if some of us just want to drop one in another Ovation?

I don't go anywhere of distance without a co pilot anymore. I almost fell asleep driving a number of times and it scares the hell out of me

I know Alpep, and I know he has a low tolerance for poor design or design that is not intuitive when it comes to technology. He can always "figure it out," he's good at that, but to actually read him post "the features are intuitive and easy to use" on something, you can bank on it being just that.

So, what you're saying is "if Al can do it, anybody can"?? ;)

Gee, I thought I was the benchmark for the idiotproof test.
Oh, very tactfully put, Miles.

Al, there's some info on the operation of the preamp on Ovation's official site. Do you know if the jam tracks are all preloaded? If not, do you know how much memory it has? I can sure see some use of the tracks and the looping feature for our own personal tracks.

there are some jam tracks pre loaded.
you get 7 free lessons from workshop live
120k of memory

100 hours of music

looping is cool but the only way to use this live is to have an extra set of arms.

you can also adjust the tempo of the tracks so you can play along at slower speeds.

thanks guys
I get no respect

Al,

Do you know if the 1/8" jack wiring is hardwired or a plug-in on the preamp end?

I'd love to install 1/8" jacks on a couple of 'O's and then just switch the preamp as needed without any wiring modifications.

Hey Al --- maybe I ought to have you ship it to me instead of Max! Solid top? That is awesome. It'll be interesting to get Max's review of the guitar once he gets it ... he's probably in a different place on the technology spectrum than Al but I doubt the review will be much different.
