First, they gave me some insanely incorrect advice regarding a modeler I am considering. I'm glad I left to do more research before buying. I would have really been disappointed if I had listened to them. But here's the kicker: I went down last night to pick up a shipping box for my Taylor (going back to El Cajon for a new pre-amp). This is a guitar that I paid over $2k for from that very store and they know that. I'm in there at least once a week, buying odds and ends. Anyway, I tell the guy (newbie...don't know him) what I want and he goes in the back to fetch one. Brings it up to the counter and tells me "That's $15". I'm a little dumbfounded. "Excuse me" I replied. "Yeah, we use these too, so we have to charge you. Its $15." Unbelievable. I refused to pay. He says he has to appeal to the manager. I tell him by all means. The night manager (whom I also don't know) peers over his glasses at me and says "ok, but just this once". I got the box, but WTF?!?!?

That’s right, I paid full price and got ripped off big time. Knowing what I know now, that guitar should have cost me $150, if not less" This is total crap, noone is making those kind of margins. Music industry retail markups are hardly a trade secret, and even with distributor discounts it would be impossible for a retailer to sell a guitar with a list of $575 for $150 without losing money, they would have paid more than that in the first place. The whole tone of his book pisses me off. Almost nobody in Musical Instrument retail is getting rich (many aren't even getting by) and this idiot is suggesting that the public should demand even lower prices in an industry where competition and discounting have already cut margins to the bone. Wanker.

Suppose someone figured out a way to make cars that were in every possible respect equal to or better than a brand new Lexus. Suppose he could sell you a car like that for $5,000, brand new. Would you buy it? What if you learned that his cost was only $500? Does that make the deal any less attractive? As Paul points out, retail margins aren't that great anyway. If you really and truly think that retailers are getting 300% and 400% markups, then by all means put your money where your mouth is and buy stock in Guitar Center.

Are you agreeing with me or suggesting that I check to see what it would really cost to ship an empty box? SWMBO maintains a large collection of empty boxes, just in case she needs to ship something to the relatives. Lately, when I complain about it, she points out that most of the big ones are my guitar boxes, so I have some motivation to get rid of a few. It will also avoid the suggestion that I use some of them to get rid of a few guitars.

The only guitar I ever shipped was by weight and I think it was less than $20. That shows you why I have so many boxes. Randy, my wife just decided not to downsize for awhile. Currently over half of our rather large garage is filled with my daughter's junk (including her car) while she tours the Northwest. Our guest room is also full of her junk. My wife's sister is moving here from Atlanta this weekend and will be living with us until she finds a place. She has 2 cats, which will add to our cat and my daughter's cat. If you want to live in our zoo instead of yours for awhile, you're welcome. It might take my wife a few days before she asks, "Who's that?"
