Location: Sunshine State, Australia | well, not necessarily "contemporary"... So... two of my all time favourite bands are the Doobie Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Also the Ozark Mountain Daredevils and classic Joe Walsh stuff. I've recently been introduced to the Marshall Tucker Band and Pure Prairie League, and re-discovered the Atlanta Rhythm Section. So that should give you a fair idea of where my tastes lie. What I'm asking of my American friends here is for some more recent bands/songs that fit the genre - to re-invigorate my ageing Southern Rock collection... Thanks in advance. Bring it on... |

Location: Jet City | Kid from my hometown went to go play for a band called .38 Special, Danny Chauncey.
They opened for LS not that far back I think
I don't know too much about 'em other than their hits on the radio. I was more an Iron Maiden/OzzyMetallica sort back then. |

Location: moline,illinois | Not so new but heres some southern rock groups you could check out,Molly Hatchet,Mountain,Black Oak Arkansas,Allman Brothers band,Steve Morse Band(if you like instumental look for Southern Steel),Little Feat,Dixie Dregs, well that's all my brain has for now...lol |

Location: Texas | If you're looking for a contemporary "Southern-Rock" band that is creative and original yet still channels the Skynyrd spirit, then, IMO, you MUST check out "Blackberry Smoke." They're the real deal! |

EDIT: Have you tried pandora.com? Set up a free account, and create a station based on one of the acts you like. It'll then try to pick other songs of a similar style to play for you. You might be able to come up with some new and interesting stuff to listen to that way.

Location: Tennessee | Hey Muzza, I meant to circle back but forgot until now. So if you want contemporary, check out Whiskey Myers. Also, JB and The Moonshine Band. Have you listened to Los Lonely Boys? They're Texican Blues. Get past the radio hit and they really got it. Another one is American Bang out of Nashville. Going back in time, The Outlaws were significant in the 70's. Green Grass and High Tides was their signature song. Another great album with great guitar work is Mudcrutch. They were a band out of Gainesville FL that got back together for an album and tour 30 years on. If you want to go back to the sixties, check out Barefoot Jerry. they kinda changed a lot of music styles in the South.

Perhaps a little too country blues for you, so then check out The Paul Thorn Band which tends more raucous. Interesting - never heard of him till I saw him with Ruthie Foster a few weeks ago. |

It's Warren Haynes from the Allman Brothers side project, been around for maybe 20 years. Its a bit of a marriage between southern rock and hard rock, but they are absolutely amazing. Warren is incredible on both vocals and guitar and Matt Abts is ridiculous on drums, makes time changes look easy as hell.
My buddies and I play a few of their tunes (Patchwork Quilt, Mr. High and Mighty), and also play a few songs they've covered in their style (Beatles - She Said She Said, Humble Pie - 30 Days in the Hole).
Check your concert calendar -- they're constantly touring. Just saw Sco-Mule at the Orpheum a few months ago. Its Gov't Mule with John Scofield. As if those two trading licks didn't blow your mind, Tinsley Ellis comes out during the encore for a 3 guitar treat. Probably seen them live a dozen times -- fantastic every time.

Warren has that big, fat Gibson via Marshall tone, while John Scofield has this light, high, and wiry sound with almost no bottom to it. Somehow it all works pretty well...what a show. |

Location: Orlando, FL | If you want a great southern rock connection check out Jeff Beck this tour and his new live album with one of my all time Southern Rock favorite vocalists - Jimmy Hall from Wet Willie.
Hall has a lot of great solo music as well. Check out his work with BHLT - Dickie Betts, Hall, ChuckLevell and Butch Trucks on You Tube. I don't think they ever put out an album.
Another contemporary great is the Tedeshi Trucks Band with the amazing Derek Trucks.
I grew up in the Florida in the 70s and saw just about everybody in the genre back in the day. I was lucky enough to see some great bands in local dive bars before they got big.
Some favorites were Sea Levell, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Dixie Dregs, the Outlaws, Elvin Bishop, the Henry Paul Band, Wet Willie, Marshal Tucker Band, Captain Beyond, Blackfoot. 38 Special, Point Blank, Stillwater. There was so much great music all over back then and there was a great music scene in central Florida that's long gone. |
