Strictly from an investment point of view...
The other advantage to guitars is that with stocks, you generally don't have one broker willing to pay one amount for a stock, and another willing to pay many times that amount for the same stock. Stocks are also not traded on their "condition."
Although stocks pay dividends, you can a guitar to use it to make a living, a serious dividend if you will, and then after several years of this, still sell it for likely at least what you payed, but usually more.
I think playing a guitar for a check, or even for free, is a heck of a lot more fun than just waiting for the "maybe" of a dividend check. |

My grandmother was convinced that the commemorative plates she bought (and subsequently lined her kitchen with) would one day be worth millions.
Instead, we (all her kids and grandkids) are stuck with a bunch of boxes out in the garage of old plates with Thomas Kinkade paintings on them.
If only grandma could have collected Martins... |

Location: Colorado Rocky Mountains | I don't collect anything for the purpose of investment. However, sometimes it just happens. For instance, I have a big box of thousands of baseball cards from the 40's, 50's and very early 60's I gathered up as a child. These were the golden years of baseball and some of these cards are quite valuable (so I am told). It was never my intention to make money on them. In fact, I played with most of the cards everyday so they are not necessarily in pristine condition. I'm still not sure what I'll do with them. In the meantime, they continue to take up space in the attic. |

It was pretty much in mint condition, four years old, and cost me $375 with the original case. It didn't take long for me to start hearing that "oh, those 3-bolt strats are sh@t". So, I figured, well it's good enough to learn on, and I've played the hell out of it ever since.
In the mean time I've played alot of 4-bolt strats and could never tell any difference. Now, they often go for over $2000 on ebay, with an average of about $1300. Well, I've had it for 27 years and I figure I've got another 15 to 20 years before I'll part with it. Then, even in the shape its in now, I'll probably get over $2000 for it.
Talk about long term investments. Geesh. I think I prefer to take the approach of buying for playing and if it increases in value, well then that's just serendipitous. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Yes, it is funny how the values go up. I was under the impression that the 3bolts were in the 2-3 range for clean ones. They will be higher in the future for sure yet for a while everyone looked at them as spoo.
The important thing is to enjoy it for all the time you have it, that's the cake, the money is the frosting. |
