hi bobg, i get the guitar friday (tomorrow), its being delivered to me by a buddy to whom i wired the cash to buy it from the owner.
ill let ya know as soon as i get a chance to sit with it an hour or so.
my buddy is the one who has taken the great pics of it for me... kinda to tide me over until tomorrow! i think its just made me want it delivered faster!!!

damon67, i thought of posting them like that, but i thought that perhaps so many pics might clog the forum up and i didnt want to do that. being new here, didnt want to wear out my welcome in the first couple posts!

it is a beautiful guitar, crack and finish checking aside. i dont mind a few flaws, im 47years old, and have a few age markings and cracks too!
the previous owner, who is a member here, said it was the best sounding round hole ovation he has heard.
fingers crossed!!

I've never heard anyone here complain about too many pictures of guitars. It's nice that you are minding your manners, but if you buy one of those early Ovations, you'll be welcomed, at least by all of us that are quite a few years older than you and your guitar.

In addition, since you're NEW here, I might as well inform you that it's quite common to send your new acquisitions around to the veteran members for them to each try for a week or two. That way you get a good, expert evaluation on the merits and worthiness of said guitar

Welcome to the site, Photodork... you'll love the guitar. It's a wood box killer!

Thanks for all the kind words friends.
I'm going to try and answer some of the questions folks pm'd me or posted here in the thread.

The guitar finally was delivered and let me tell you I was like a kid in the m+m shop.….oh my.
My first thought, after it got acclimatised from outside, was let it sit in the case and stare at the top. The spruce looked amazing under all that clear coat.
The crack repair by the mother ship looked solid and the few finish check's didn't look out of place.
Finger board looked clean and frets looked pretty good too. Won't be refretting it anytime soon.
Removed it out from the case and gave it a few spins around. The bowl was so shiny and clean, the neck was true. I couldn't believe
I was holding a little piece of ovation history in my hands..

Took out my pick and gave it a couple of g, a, c and d chords. This guitar rings like church bells calling the faithful.
The resonance from this deep bowl was absolutely astonishing.
I've not heard another ovation that sounds like this. In fact, I've not heard many quitars sound as good.
It sounds like an old prewar flattop but with a sustain and a projection that was astounding. This is a seriously loud instrument that resonates from deep inside.

It resonates so much in fact that while lightly resting my fingers on the strings and talking to my friends, my fingers were vibrating from my voice being picked up through the soundhole and transferring back out to the strings. The deep bowl is a sound magnifier to be sure.

I've not heard another ovation guitar that sounds this much like a guitar. Maybe that sounds weird, but the Josh white sounds more like a wood guitar than most other wood guitars..

Wayne, it truely is a wood box killer and I'd like to thank you for parting with it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be the last owner until my passing.
Its a keeper.

The action is very good, no buzzing to my ears and at the 12 fret, it looks to be good. My machinist's rulers are at work, but I'll try a rough paper and ruler measurement to give the height tomorrow.

You old timers might not be getting a chance to play this one anytime soon unless you are out my way.....its magnificent. Trust me on this.

Just curious, based on serial number this one was pretty late in the run of Josh guitars. Where those the original tuners? I don't think I've seen the second generation tuners standard on a Josh before.

Over looks like a nice one and I couldn't agree more about the tone.

No, the tuners are not original.

They arent originals for sure. The tuners look a lot like the tuners on the jw reissue.
Maybe they were swapped out for the newer set?

Ps. Just strung it with exp mediums and THIS GUITAR RINGS!!

photodork - 2014-03-16 12:16 PM  THIS GUITAR RINGS!!

Mine did too.  A good solid sneeze in the room would make it ring as it hung on the wall.  One time we were recording a tune and were picking up a high-pitched howling noise we couldn't figure out.  We finally traced it to the JW that was hanging on a Hercules stand ... it was picking up the congas and the electric guitar and all the right frequencies turned the JW into a ringing, howling monster.

been noodling in DADGAD this morning and im just awestruck with the projection, tones and overtones this thing is making.
im half tempted to go to my local L+M music store here, ask some silly questions just so i can break it out and sonically destroy all the guitars in stock.

due to an accident at work in january, im not able to play more than 5-10 min at a time..but it makes me long for the pain to settle down so i can pick this cannon up again.... so my reign of destruction will be short
